I'm looking at a deal online from a private party in used condition located in San Diego. Being in Sacramento, I would have them shipped, so I called my local gun shop to see what fees would be and was informed I cannot do a transfer from private party in California unless it is FTF. Is this information correct? How do I see the majority of sellers in the long guns section willing to ship their guns if it's not legal to do a transfer in ca unless FTF? I've done several FTF transactions but this would be my first trying to do a shipped transaction.

Transfers in CA, FTF only?
Tags: None -
A Private Party Transfer (PPT) must be done "Face to Face" and both parties must be California residents. That pretty much rules out shipping of the weapon. The advantages to a PPT are that handguns do not need to be on the roster, and the dealer is constrained as to his charges for the service.I'm looking at a deal online from a private party in used condition located in San Diego. PPT is not the only form of transfer available. Weapons can be shipped when a regular dealer transfer occurs. But in that case, the roster applies and the dealer is not constrained by the PPT fee limitation. If you build a man a fire, you'll keep him warm for the evening. If you set a man on fire, you'll keep him warm for the rest of his life. -
Are you doing a PPT on a handgun or a long-gun?I'm looking at a deal online from a private party in used condition located in San Diego. PPT on handguns are often done FTF primarily because of the Roster. PPTs must be done face to face. If not on the Roster, you can't ship the handgun to the buyer as it would be a standard transfer, not a PPT, and not exempt from application of the Roster.
If it is on the Roster, you can send it to the buyer's FFL no different than any other gun, it's just not considered a PPT that is restricted to the $10 Transfer Fee (i.e., $35 = $25DROS + $10 FFL Fee). On a standard transfer, the FFL could charge its own transfer fee (usually from $65 to $100, and a User Tax on the price).
You can ship the long-gun to a buyer, but then it's just a standard transfer; not a "PPT" that is restricted to the $10 Transfer Fee, and the dealer will charge you for a transfer fee no different than if receiving it from outside of CA (usually $65 to $100 depending on the dealer). They may also charge a "User tax" on the purchase price of the gun.
If you are trying to transfer a Long-gun, pending it's not considered an AW in CA, the dealer should still take in the long-gun in for transfer of course, at their standard transfer fee charge. You won't get the luxury of the $35 PPT transfer cost.

So it is a combo deal, M1A Scout and Kimber Custom 2. No assault weapon and on roster handgun...Comment

It will not be ftf but yes you can ship your gun to ffl for buyer to do dros. No law against that. If handgun then must be on roster.Comment

Then you can ship these; or receive them as in your case. However, the FFL's transfer fee will apply. The FFL may even want to charge the transfer fee per gun.
If the FFL your inquiring to do this, doesn't want to do it at all, that's their prerogative. They aren't required to do in-coming transfers from outside sources the way they are required to do PPTs.
Find a different FFL.

Ok sounds good. Maybe it was a miscommunication that I was trying to PPT instead of standard transfer. He did say it would be one dros fee and a $75 transfer fee for both. But then backed out when I said it was used from private seller. Then you can ship these. However, the FFL's transfer fee will apply. The FFL may even want to charge the transfer fee per gun.

Find a FFL who will accept shipments from non-licensees and who has low transfer fees. Not all FFLs will accept shipments from private parties (non-licensees) even though it is allowed by law. Otherwise your seller will need a FFL to ship these to your FFL.
Hopefully you are getting a screaming deal on these, because there will be some added costs when it is said and done.Last edited by SkyHawk; 12-30-2017, 1:48 PM.Comment

Reassure the FFL the Kimber is on the Roster. He is probably assuming it isn't.
Get the EXACT model number from the seller, and do your homework to be sure it matches a current model on the Roster on the DOJ's website AS OF 2018 because that's when you'll be receiving the gun.
Then he'll likely do it.
And $75 for both is pretty good. Try to see if you can work with him on the point above.

Called a different shop with amazing brains! As long as the M1A is california version(it's coming from San Diego) and the Kimber is on roster, it will be a standard FFL to FFL transfer. And better yet, it would be one dros fee, $25, and one FFL fee of $50 for both.Comment
