    Cost for out-of-state ammo transfer

Has anybody talked to your local FFL about whether they will be accepting shipment of ammo from out of state or what they might be charging for the privilege?

I imagine that it might still be cost-effective to buy out of state if you buy several thousand at a time and spread out the transfer fee over many rounds...

If I was an FFL, my fee would be based on the amount of ammo that I was receiving.

For example, if someone decides to order several thousand rounds of ammo and having it delivered to my business taking up floor space and require me to handle it while being responsible for its well being, it would cost them more than a few boxes of 9mm.

Also, if I am a retail store, why would I accept ammo to compete with the ammo on my shevles?

I'm sure those FFLs who were/are charging upwards of $100 to $150 for receiving a gun are licking their chops and drooling now.

It's been discussed in a number of threads. Several folks have asked about starting up a business to receive ammo from out-of-state. I thought about doing it myself.

The only way it makes economic sense for an FFL is to charge a fee that would probably exceed the savings unless you buy a truckload at a time.

LGS stores wont be doing it as its cost prohibitive, floor space, receiving.... Why give away their profit. The place to look is going to be the FFLs working out of their house, the ones charging $35 + dros for receiving firearms.
Per the law I think they can only charge $5 per transfer but Im sure the LGS will be adding a receiving surcharge, floor space/storage surcharge etc... since they're not required to receive ammo. Cant really argue with them either i havent seen a lot of LGS with a ton of floor space. They tend to be smaller family owned shops, not designed to handle this.
Also this is calguns as soon as we find an FFL we're going to be having pallets and pallets of rounds delivered to them.

The one LGS I saw interviewed on ABC 7, stated they have their own ammunition inventory to look after and hence would not receiving shipments for individuals.

in my opinion, the all in cost is still going to be infinitely cheaper to buy online vs. at a local shop. i can currently get most common calibers online for 50% of the cost of buying locally. once the new restrictions go into effect, that cost difference is going to widen. here's what i think your cheapest options are going to look like next year, for 1,000 rounds of 9mm:

                      1) local gun shop: $300 out the door
                      2) online, shipped to gun shop: $160 shipped, plus $16 tax collected by LGS plus whatever fee they charge.

so unless they charge a fee of over $100 to receive the 1,000 rounds, it will still be cheaper to buy online.

all that being said, lets assume you want to purchase 2,000 rounds and the LGS charges $50/thousand to receive and do paperwork. that means you'll be paying $100 plus tax of around $30 - that's an extra cost of $130 added to the online purchase price. if you plan to purchase 2,000 rounds, which i think most of us are, you are much better off getting a C&R and COE (all in cost of approximately $125) and having the ammo delivered directly to your house.

I would think they will need to charge the difference between their local price and your online order price to make their stuff attractive.
                        OR
Charge you the exact profit they would make if you buy from them. They can make the same $$ without risk. Could be $50 for a case of 223.

If you can even find a dealer willing to do it, or a vendor for that matter, I guarantee it will not be cheaper than getting a C&R+COE and carrying on like nothing has changed.

Why anyone that can pass a background check would even remotely consider dealing with the nightmare of transferring ammo through a dealer and paying their fees, is beyond me. It sounds completely assinine.

Yep, I think many people are afraid of doing this because of all the FUD being spread about loosing your 4th A rights when you get a 03FFL. Seen much of this bad info and ignorance being posted right here on this forum.

The $5 is for FTF transfer both buyer/seller present. Receiving they can charge a fee to receive a fee to store and also a transfer fee (unclear if it is the standard $1 fee or whatever they want it to be).
