    Gunsafe dial maintenance

20 year old safe with an S&G dial, its always worked very well. It took a few attempts to get it open, seemed a little sticky,
How are you all maintaining the dials on your safe?
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

I have an S&G dial on all three of my safes.. I wont have anything else. Never a problem and no maintenance at all. What maintenance would you do to one??

That's a bad sign. A locksmith can disassemble the wheel pack, clean the wheels and other parts, replace parts if worn and lubricate.

      Cheaper than drilling and replacing.

Had a friend who cleaned and oiled his dial's lock work. It now takes him 5 min or more to get in his safe. He has to hit the combo perfectly.

          OP

Call your local professional locksmith who sells / services all types of safes including those with S&G dials. Get a quote and how long would the service take if you came in with your safe door. Ask them what's the best time & day so they could service your dial while you wait.

I brought my safe door (30 year old AMSEC with S&G dial) in and sat & watched the locksmith do the service. Took about 20 minutes. Best $60 I ever spent.

          Good Luck

P.S......And yes an armed person (wife) was home and babysat the safe during my absence. :-)

I don't have a large safe but taking the door off is going to require at least 2-3 people. It's 3/8" solid steel. When we bought our current home we had the locks changed, the lock smith that came mentioned he does work on S&G locks. I'll give him a call and see how much it would cost for a home visit. He only charged us 70.00 to re-key 3 locks for the home visit.

Thanks guys, I very much appreciate your input.
