Chula Vista Walmart and gun related items

I saw a pistol cleaning kit at Walmart today. It was locked behind glass with everything else related to firearms (ammo, cleaning patches, cleaning solvents, etc.).
Purchasing it required more than just waiting for the guy to open the case. He then had to take it up to the designated counter where alcohol and tobacco products are sold. It was only at that point I could pay for and take receipt of the cleaning kit.
I continued shopping, having been told that the item would be at said counter waiting for me. The lady at the checkout counter had no idea what I was talking about and said she would have to call the manager. It was quickly turning into a "I am going be here for a half hour" type of deal and a steadily growing line of people waiting to purchase their items (and staring at me). I told her to skip it, that I had changed my mind.
That was a first time 'really weird' experience that I have had with a gun related item purchasing "attempt".
The major intersection of this Walmart is Oxford and Broadway.

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that Walmart only locks up items most likely to be shoplifted. Might say more about the area than Walmart.

I understand the ammo, guns and and other expensive items behind glass but not cleaning supplies. Too much work for the employees to open. No cashier in sporting goods there?

There might be a market for them South of the nearby border. Do stores in Mexico even sell shooting supplies due to government restrictions on firearms?

Some Wally Marts lock up the condoms too,others the shaving razor cartridges....good reasons to avoid the place. I suppose the locks speak to the neighborhood....or should I just say, da hood?

My local WM has all of their ammo locked up except for most of the 12 gauge. Once in a blue moon they ask for ID, I've even been refused a purchase (4-5 years ago) because my license had expired.

Walmart out here locks up all the ammo except shells and then they have the cosmetics and razor section locked up to where you can't bring carts into it. Can't even get a bottle of aftershave without getting the glass unlocked and checking out right there, not even worth it I go elsewhere for that stuff. For some reason they also find it necessary to lock up $5 normal size bottles of soap. Who steals that sh*t

Every WM location differs. The one nearest my winter home in Orange County has ammo (except shotgun shells) locked up, all air/BB/paintball guns and ammo, and air/airsoft/BB accessories locked up, including cleaning kits. However, the regular cleaning kits, CLP, targets, gun accessories, etc are in the open. Stuff that is locked up must be accessed by an employee in Sporting Goods and paid for at the register in that department.

All the WM locations I've been to in Alaska still have a fully staffed gun counter. Guns and ammo are either in the glass case or on the wall behind the counter (behind glass), and everything else is in the open. Different world there. Yeah, Chula Vista proper = No a good place to be.

Now eastside in the Eastlake and Otay Ranch area, so much nicer.
