The only thing you'll need to have before applying is your Texas Drivers License. No residency requirement.

I didn't jump on mine because i'm always around firearms, but on Sept 1, when the fee dropped from $140 to $40, I got mine. Time from application to getting my LTC in the mail, two weeks!

Does Texas put a limit on honoring other state's permits?

Before I moved to NV, I got my easy & painless & fairly cheap AZ CWP by mail. NV honors AZ permits, but if you become a resident it's only good for 60 days, after which you need an NV permit.

Might be easier for you to do the same, that way you're legit and have some breathing room until you can get around to getting your TX resident permit.

Did it straight away. Technically it’s a non-resident license for the first 6 months, not that there is any difference in the license you receive.

2 week’s turnaround and useful for checkout as no Background check needed - reduces time spent by 50%......5 minutes instead of 10......

I have also moved to DFW area. Have not done my CHL (CCW) yet. IIRC, if you qualify with a revolver, there are some limitations on what you can carry. However, if you qualify with a semi-auto, your CHL is generic. Reach in the safe and carry what ever you feel like today.

I applied for my CHL on the way home from the drivers license office. Did required training with a Flower Mound officer whose carry gun was a stainless Colt Commander. Followed training with the shooting qual. I used a BHP and would have made 100% but I blew the last shot off the target trying to finish a happy-face pattern...the "range" was a cargo container half buried in dirt in the boonies near Copper Canyon.

Those links show basic reciprocity for out-of-staters but not any limits like the 60 days thing. I imagine any restrictions would be buried somewhere in the regs, didn't want to bother to look it up, thought someone might know. It might be that an out of state permit becomes void the instant you become a resident, if not, like I said it's nice to have the option to legally carry until you get your in-state permit.
