I have always found this intriguing. CA gun owners despise the DOJ and their "AHA! GOTCHA!" tactics, always trying to trip up the law-abiding gun owner with extremely vague or convoluted laws. But many of the same gun owners will be quite pleased to partake in their own "AHA! GOTCHA!" moment, when they see something like this.

AR15 pistols should be legal, 80% or otherwise. Featureless shouldn't be a thing. Barrel length shouldn't matter. Shall not be infringed. I agree this post isn't "snitching" by any means, but the glee of "catching" someone doing something the abhorred DOJ arbitrarily defined as illegal, confuses me.

I'm probably guilty of this to some extent as well. I'm sure there's some psychological reason for this, but I'm too simple to understand

I don't think there's "glee" in catching someone with an illegally configured gun. I think we have a duty to help each other understand CAs stupid laws so no one gets in trouble. When someone points out that your gun is illegal, you should thank them for the heads up and fix the problem. Don't make up some BS story about it being ok because it's just a display weapon.

I agree with pretty much everything you're saying. I think for the most part though Ca gun owners are pretty quiet and mind our own. You're right though, I see people pointing "illegal" things out at gun stores from time to time. 99.9 percent of the time they are wrong.
        I envy your freedom.

See the two bolded sections above. There are countless threads that start out "I heard <this> at my LGS" or "I was told <that> at the range".
The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money.

So starting a thread asking about it is the same, to you, as calling the cops?

            Good to know.

No, it isn't. Not at all. He gave no specifics. Didn't say what show, what vendor, no description of the guy, nothing.

This place cracks me up. Here, a vague thread asking if something is illegal turns into a third grade "snitches get stitches" free for all. I have never called the cops on any firearm violation, real or imagined, nor can I envision one that wasn't a crime in and of itself, like a drive by.

But if someone is going to shoot an illegally configured firearm at a public range, or stick it on a table AT A GUN SHOW, it's comedy gold to see the righteous indignation by people demanding that others "myob".

Here's an idea, if it's your business and not everyone's business, don't put it on public display. You really think that every person at a gun show or range feels bound by the ethics of the third grade?

Some people are in for disappointment.
