In general, if you want to be "ethically accurate" to 500 yards then I'd recommend practicing at least 20% farther away.

There are very few established ranges in the urban areas that long, so giving us an idea of your location could help point to an instructor nearby-ish.

If cost is truly not an issue, go to Gunsite. https://www.gunsite.com/classes/precision-rifle-7-2/

You could try an Appleseed at 25m, that simulates 100-400 yard position shooting with reduced size targets. You'll have 2 days where you get taught their version of the fundamentals of marksmanship using nothing but a sling. After that you could look for an Appleseed KD (Known Distance) where you will shoot actual 400 yard targets for 2 days.

        Here's a link: https://appleseedinfo.org/

        Disclosure: I'm an Appleseed SB.

Highpower or precision rifle matches, nothing better than trial by fire.

            Norcal or Socal?

Background: I hunt, I've done a number of precision rifle courses, and I've shot PRS and other long-range comps. If long-range hunting is your goal, don't be afraid of a course that has "sniper" in the title, shooting at distance is shooting at distance, regardless of target.

As mentioned above, Appleseed is a good thing to do, but it is not a long-range course. It's dirt cheap though and since the focus is on sling-supported shooting I'd recommend it to any hunter.

            Gunsite is a viable option.
            Frontsite is a viable option.

I wouldn't use a match as a place to learn long-range shooting. Practice it yes, but not to start the journey.

I've done this course and can recommend it. It's only two days long so easy to wedge into your schedule: http://internationaltactical.com/sniper_1.html

Caylen Wojcik (Gunwerks) and Jim Smith (Spartan Tactical) used to teach precision rifle courses at Pala and may still be doing so. Both are excellent. Caylen also puts on a precision hunter course. You can contact him through Gunwerks or his social accounts:

Tyler Hughes in Apple Valley knows his stuff.

It's been years since I did PR1 and PRII at Rifles Only but they were great classes.

Clint Smith does precision rifle courses in Oregon and Texas. He's awesome. https://thunderranchinc.com

If you are willing to travel to Florida these guys have a great course and facility: https://www.coreshooting.com/

Bill Rapier does PR courses and is worth the trip to wherever he is delivering one: http://www.amtacshooting.com/courses/shooting

            Good luck.

Start with Appleseed. It is cheap and some go to 400 yards.

After that, take any precision rifle course.

Or start with any precision rifle course and then do an Appleseed.

I am in Bakersfield. North or south CA will work. I appreacite the heads up. Anywhere from Sac to San Diego will work as I can put hotels on the company dime and maybe get a little work done in the PM.

You can use whatever optic you want at an Appleseed, and pretty much whatever rifle you want too. A lever gun is pretty tough to use in a timed prone stage, but bolts work fine and semi autos are the easiest. Appleseed very much tries to teach people to run their own gun the way they like it, although you'll need a g.i. style sling (others work but that's the easiest), and no bipods. They are available all over the State.

Long distance Appleseeds are available at Kingman AZ, and sometimes Hat Creek CA, for after you've made Rifleman at a normal shoot.

Quality trigger time is the best way and one of the easiest ways to get that trigger time along with help from great shooters is to attend some sort of competitions. High Power matches, Appleseed, F-Class, etc. are all fun and you can learn more at a few matches than you'll learn from a structured class.

LMS Defense runs an outstanding set of long range practical rifle courses. They have an amazing 1700 acre facility just south of Hollister. Hit up Josh over there for details or see their website.
There are no great men. Just great challenges which ordinary men, out of necessity, are forced by circumstance to meet.

ASDS down in San Diego has great reviews. I’ve done a few shoots/classes there. A couple were actually Calguns meet ups and shoots.

Yep. They're also just outside of Reno here in NV. Plan on taking many of their courses this spring.
