    Ordering firearm from Cabelas?

This is my 1st time going to get a bolt action .308 rifle online from Cabela's. I heard that someone has to drive all the way to reno to pick it up in store. Have no clue what is the correct way to do this:

    1. I live in bay area. Can Cabela's ship the gun directly to my local ffl?

    2. If so, should I fill the ffl address instead of my own address when complete the order? And any other info is required?

    3. If I have to drive to Reno, is there a 10-days waiting period as it is in CA? I don't wanna drive twice

    4. Any other suggestions?

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    【Update】:
When I tried to checkout online on Cabella's, it asked me to fill my resident zipcode (which is in CA) and a cabella's store to ship (I choosed Reno). And there is a tax ~$1XX added on top of the original price. Is this a NV tax or CA tax? If it is a NV tax, am I required to pay a CA tax again when the cabella's in Reno ship it to my local ffl?

    Thanks!

It is unlawful for a CA resident to purchase a firearm directly in Nevada. If Cabella's will even do it, they would have to ship it to a FFL in CA where you would have to go through the DROS process and 10 day wait and the CA FFL would charge you a transfer fee on top of the state fees. The cost involved would most likely not be worth it.

Check and see if they have what you want here. They already have arrangements with local FFLs. They will ship the rifle to the one you choose and then you continue the purchase just like you would at any gun store.

A lot of times, Cabela's guns on sale are only available for in-store pickup. No Cabela's in Cali?

I went inside one for the first time this past weekend. It's like Bass Pro Shops, but even moreso. I didn't want to leave.

Thanks. Am I required to pay both NV and CA tax since it has to be shipped to reno store first and there is a tax already added when i tried to check out online.

you only pay tax once. The FFL shouldn't charge you tax if you can prove you already paid tax to cabellas when you bought the rifle. Cabellas was recently bought by bass pro shops, so they are likely required to collect tax upfront as they have a brick and mortar store in California.

You might want to see if they can ship it to a bass pro near you and possibly avoid any FFL fees (and maybe even shipping fees) since they are now the same company.

And exactly what rifle are you trying to buy? Unless it is significantly cheaper at cabellas vs a local shop, you are usually better off buying locally.

Get a local (to you) FFL to agree to receive the rifle. Send copy of FFL to Cabelas. Pay Cabelas to ship it to your FFL. Your FFL will charge you CA sales tx, dros and whatever fee they want to receive the rifle. I've seen charges as high as $125 + the dros fee so take that into consideration. You are not required to pay NV sales tax as well as CA.

Buying a firearm from Cabela’s is an easy process. Contact the store, tell them which gun you want. As long as it is on the California approved list or exempt from the list, they will ship it to your FFL.

The only issue the buyer faces is insuring that the Cabela’s store has the appropriate FFL information. I handled that by asking my FFL to provide the necessary information, FFL copies, etc. to Cabalas.
I paid for the gun and shipping with a credit card. When the gun arrived at my FFL, DROS was started and appropriate fees paid.

A simple process. No drama and no issues.

Didn't they open a Bass Pro recently nearby? Call them and ask if they honor Cabela's sale prices and then ask if they have what you want in stock. You might be able to just drive down there and get it.

Just for reference, I called cabela's Reno this morning. The manager in charge was very friendly and suggested the following steps:

                            1. Order the firearm online and ship to the reno store. Choose store pickup in checkout.
                            2. When the firearm arrives the store, call the store and ask your ffl to fax them the required info.
                            3. The store would then ship to your local ffl and the additional shipping fee is $25 which would be collected on phone.
