If so, I would just do that. Then take a bunch of jackets and cover what's visible from the cabin.

Chances are, if you are ever stopped by a LEO and he sees a rifle, 99.99% chance that he will pull his weapon and point it at your face. You will then be asked to exit the vehicle, face on the ground as he cuffs and stuff you until the incident is straightened out. God forbid his trigger finger gets twitchy and you now have a nice hole in your right lung.
LOL. Chances are that it depends on where you are at the time. I've NEVER had that happen but, yea, in the middle of downtown Los Angeles, it might. However, in a rural area, specially during hunting season, I highly doubt it would happen more than 5% of the time.

I've transported mine, unloaded, in a locked case, case wrapped in a towel (to be discreet) on my motorcycle.
Similar to this (my compound bow).
CHP has looked at me, but never have been stopped.

You don’t need a locked case unless you go through a school zone (which is almost impossible to avoid these days). When I’m in an area that you can hunt my ar is in the front seat and my mag is in my pocket. Perfectly legal.

Some times things are perfectly legal until you run into a cop that doesn't know the law. I have a trunk and I'm going to use it.

What is the definition of a school zone?
            Public school K thru 12?
I pass along the far end of parking lot of Cal State San Marcos on the route to/from the range.

Read PC 626.9. It is all schools, public and private from K through colleges and universities and 1000 feet around each school.

I frequently transport all types of firearms, and work with numerous LE folks from different agencies, and nearly all have said something like this:
If it's not on your CCW permit, lock it up, unloaded. Is this the absolute technical reading of the law? NO, of course not. Do you wish to stand on the side of the road trying to convince some LE officer who can make your life miserable that you know more than he does? NO, of course not. You may actually know a lot more, but at that moment he is the one calling the shots. Not you!
Work smarter, not harder: case it, lock it, cover it up. Drive well, keep your vehicle in order, let them focus on somebody else. In this case the Grey Man wins.

Thanks Russ, your post was useful for me. I travel to AZ at least every other month if not more. I have a lock box in my truck that I always have a long gun in, with loaded mags in the same box but not loaded in the rifle. Nice to know that I can remove the rifle and slap a mag in it, once I cross the border if I want to.
