    Interesting - 50 Cal vs Titanium

    This video really surprised me, probably because I'm not very knowledgeable about metallurgy. I would have expected a 50 Caliber Browning Armour-piercing bullet to penetrate just about anything, but it won't penetrate Titanium - only went in a half inch.

    Flawed tests, he is placing the target at angle and the hits just bounce off. Shooter need to retest with the plate flat on.

    It was still interesting video

      He did another test with the plate set up straight. Titled 20mm v.s. Titanium (is 20mm same as .50cal?)

        That's the reason they put a titanium "tub" around the cockpit in the A-10 Warthog.

          .50 = 12.7mm. 20mm is much bigger.

            Here is the same guy doing the 50 Cal test at a 90 degree angle. The second round starts a grass fire.

              Makes me wonder about Captain America's shield.

              It's convex, if a bullet struck the shield off-center, wouldn't he get hit with the spalling?

                Please, Cap's shield is an alloy of Vibranium, steel, and other classified elements.

                  Interesting videos. I was a bit surprised at how hot the block of titanium got. The videos also illustrate why the folks who sell AR500 targets recommend using loads that keep impact velocity below 3,000 FPS. I have some dimpled AR500 targets that help prove their point.

                    Back in the day we souvenired some titanium plate of various thickness from the shipyard. Taped together a stack about five inches thick, leaned it up against a gas can and whacked it with a 50.

                    It punched through about four of them, we found the plugs that came out and you could almost fit them back in the holes. Pretty cool effect. The gas can was punted down range but unholed.
                    It's not PTSD, it's nostalgia.

                      Judging from the sound and the way the ricochet came right back at them, the titanium vibrates pretty good too.

                      Man, my Raufoss seems to be getting more valuable all the time.

                      (not in CA obv, there's explosive in the projectile)
