Carrying a firearm in a small backpack?

Unloaded, action open with cable lock, in a small backpack with zipper also locked. Ammo in separate area of backpack also locked.

I couldn't find a thread. Found some that were close but they started going off on tangents.

Sanctuary state..... If they care more about the lives of illegals then I feel it's up to me to care about my own life.

How about a CCW instead? By the time you unpack, unlock, load magazine, load weapon a lot can happen. If you can do all that then you can GTFO.

I’d imagine by the time you unzipped, took out pistol, unlocked pistol, retrieved Ammo, loaded gun the perp would already have what he wanted.

If you think the locked backpack is 'secure' - and there is no legal definition (see also my old post) then that's a legal way to transport. Skip the cable lock, though; that has no legal significance, it's a 'locked container' that matters.

Where you would find problems is out of your vehicle; on foot, you have 'destination requirements' - again, see the wiki for details.

No cable lock on the piece is required. No lock on the compartment with the ammunition would be required. Unloaded in a locked secure container for the handgun only. Lockable rugs have been used for going to the range for a long time. Don't see where a backpack would be any less secure.

Although the guns in the bag change to suit mood. Right now it has the G17 in it but the AR currently in the bag is a 16" .223 gun. In TN I carry the 10.5" SBR. Sometimes when I am in CA I swap the .223 out for a .300BLK 16" gun.

If you don't have a CCW permit, tbh don't bother OP. If you have enough time to unlock and load that gun, then either your life wasn't really in that great of a danger, or you could have used that time to run the heck away.

There is that chance that when you run away, your assailants run after you. Then you may find temporary shelter in an elevator or in a closet. During which time you unlock your firearm, load, and continue to run away. Warning them to stay back and only using deadly force when there is deadly action being taken against you.
