Or if you buy ammo in a case just stack the cases up. It will store just fine for short or long term.

That info is helpful if you use ammo cans though
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

curious as to how the rounds are placed in the can. are they just thrown in all willynilly or are the stacked neatly in the cans (like they way they are originally packaged) to get to, for instance, 1200 rds of 5.56 in a 50 cal. can?

I guess willy-nilly would be the answer.

If you stack them like they are in boxes, I think they have a 12-step program for that...

Those are the numbers for loose ammo. I once tried to neatly stack 5.56 ammo in a can once, I got maybe a few dozen more rounds in but it took much more time & after a few shakes from carrying them around they all got mixed up anyway.

Was just ordering in some ammo to back-fill. From SGammo I ordered
223 in 62 and 69 grain. Their banner read, "Because of volume, your
order may not ship on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday".

Popped over to Foundry35 for some 22's. They are out of almost
all the 22LR, except, of course, some Fiocchi stuff. I have bought a lot
from these guys, $12.00 flat ship. Never seen their cupboard that bare.

Think our Kali Buying Run has started? Maybe.

I have 325 or 350 rounds of 12 gauge ammo in a fat 50 can. Thing is really heavy.

.50 cal cans are great. I got a bunch for $9 ea at a flea market but I have to say the $15 ones from Harbor Freight are excellent. I have way too many...

Fully stocked .50 cal cans with pistol ammo are heavy!!!

I prefer to leave my ammo in factory packaging unless it has excessive styrofoam organizers. Easier to grab and organize on range days.

The Europeans seem to package ammo much tighter than US manufacturers. Those convenient paper wrapped 7.62 and 5.45 speak for themselves, but compare a pack of S&B or MEN 9mm to blazer brass- much more compact.

they probably are saving money by using less packing material.

i can fit 3 boxes of fiocchi 9mm in the same space as 2 boxes of federal blazer 9mm due to the plastic tray.

I use 30 cal cans for pistol ammo, and 50 cal can for rifle.
pistol ammo in a 50 cal can weighs to much.

+1 It'd be nice if that article had a few more details about methods of achieving those numbers.

The 5.56 in a .50 number seems about right, maybe a little light.

                              1,000 rds (997, actually):

That .308 in a .50 number seems low.

                              400 rds:

Interesting info on packaging: Judging by the stenciling on the can in the second pic, the Canucks had 600 rds of 5.56 in a .50 can when apparently it was clipped, boxed and bandoleered, as opposed to the same 600 in a .30 can the preppers reported.

Some guys take ammo to the range in old milk jugs. Sure it will wear out sooner rather than later, but it's not like they're hard to replace. Never liked the idea of doing that, but I use coffee "cans" for some brass, what ain't in 5 gallon buckets.
