I've got some dealers here in N.San Diego county that charge a $45 DROS fee and a $25 background check fee, I thought the DROS took care of the background check. It sounds like they're trying to take advantage of me

DROS fee plus background check fee?

Are you sure you are describing the fees right? Please describe your transaction....
- Are you buying a gun from the FFL?
- Are you doing a PPT?
-Are you having a gun you bought somewhere else shipped to the FFL to DROS to you?"Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice. Moderation in pursuit of justice is no virtue." ----Sen. Barry Goldwater

I want to order one of those Chinese surplus SKSs and the dealers are telling me that they want $45.00 for DROS and $25.00 for a background check.Comment

"DROS" as commonly used is actually 3 fees which together are $25 -https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/dlrfaqs#19GWhat fees do I charge a firearm purchaser?
In addition to the state's $19.00 DROS fee, you must also charge a $1.00 Firearms Safety fee and a $5.00 Safety and Enforcement fee. If the transaction being processed is a dealer sale, consignment return, or return from pawn, you may impose other charges as long as this amount is clearly shown as a "dealer fee" and not misrepresented as a state fee.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page
Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!Comment

So if you are ordering it from somewhere else and having it shipped to your FFL, your FFL can charge whatever transfer fee they want plus standard DROS. $45 is really pretty reasonable compared to what many FFLs charge.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groupsComment

$25 is the DROS which does include the background check.
$45 is what they are charging you to receive the gun, store the gun and release the gun to you after your waiting period is up.Last edited by ar15barrels; 09-30-2017, 8:47 PM.Randall Rausch

The dealers telling me that I had to pay an additional $25 for a background check that bothers me because I thought DROS took care of that. If they want to make a profit then just tell me,don't act like you're my friend when you're actually taking advantage of meComment

Chill, it is just semantics. Don't freak out over some employees incorrect use of terminology here. The dealers telling me that I had to pay an additional $25 for a background check that bothers me because I thought DROS took care of that. If they want to make a profit then just tell me,don't act like you're my friend when you're actually taking advantage of me
They are correct and not gouging or taking advantage of you. If you are expecting them to handle this transfer for free, then it is you trying to take advantage of them.
The $25 fee is the DROS - aka the state fees which include background check.
The $45 fee is the transfer fee, set by the dealer to compensate them for handling/storing/extra paperwork on a gun that you didn't buy from them.
Those are standard, some dealers charge $100 or more for the transfer fee.
You will probably also have to pay tax. Don't freak out over that either - no matter what they call it
No one ever said buying a gun in this state was cheap.Last edited by SkyHawk; 09-30-2017, 9:05 PM.Comment

Ask them exactly what the DROS includes. The dealers telling me that I had to pay an additional $25 for a background check that bothers me because I thought DROS took care of that.
If they want to make a profit then just tell me,don't act like you're my friend when you're actually taking advantage of me
Then catch them in the lie and get them to do the transfer for only the $25 under the threat of you involving the CADOJ over their practice of improperly using state fees as the explanation for collecting dealer fees.Randall Rausch

Most likely there's an communication error between OP and the LGS. Either OP understood it wrong or LGS clerk said it wrong.
ar15barrels explained it well below:
"$25 is the DROS which does include the background check.
$45 is what they are charging you to receive the gun, store the gun and release the gun to you after your waiting period is up."Comment

Yes assuming your Sks is being bought from an online shop and shipped to the dealer, it sounds like $45 is the dealers transfer fee. Which is an absolute STEAL by the way. Most charge $75 or more, plus $25 for DROS. And they are all required to charge tax.Last edited by boopiejones; 09-30-2017, 9:02 PM.my Benitez goes to 11Comment
