Shotgun and handgun. Unless a CCW holder, keep handgun unloaded while driving and in a locked case. Shotgun unloaded and in a soft rifle case.
Do not travel with hollow points as they are not legal in every state. (I think New Jersey or New York prohibits them.)
I am not sure of the mag restrictions in every state and think New York May have some strict magazine capacity laws.

Having both a handgun and a shotgun would be my preference. I keep a handgun in my kayak when I am using it on the water. Also, if there is an event where he needs to arm himself, his wife will also have a firearm.

Most RV's have pretty tight quarters so swinging a shotgun can be tricky. In the toy hauler I carry the S&W R8 with a light attached in a locked safe along with six loaded 8-round clips. It makes it easy to unload for travel yet still provides for quick reloads, and the .357 will get the job done.

I own and travel in a 21' Class B. There is virtually zero room in there to swing a shotgun, even if it has a folding stock. After a bunch of study on the subject, I would recommend a 4" .357 revolver. Remember that in some states like the PRC, there are magazine restrictions so standard capacity mags for something like a G19 are going to illegal.

I would also say an auto in .45ACP would be a good choice, but it's hard to beat a .357 mag. I have a 4" S&W 589 which to me is the perfect .357 revolver.
