    Malaysian 7.62 tarnish

So I bought some of the Malaysian 7.62x51 that showed up everywhere lately. This is the scariest milsurp ammo I have ever seen. I thought the first box I opened was covered in black mold but I assume it's tarnish. The copper has a thick layer of powdery black and green. The brass rough to the touch with tarnish. I've put plenty of tarnished milsurp through my rifles but this is a whole new level. What level of tarnish are you willing to run? Can it be cleaned up?

It came from J and G sales (who i love). I've seen mixed reviews so I took a chance. Should of just went with the Hirtenberger but I was feeling cheap.

I just now opened a few more boxes. It appears to get a little better as I go deeper but still very disappointing.

Brasso and a hand drill, or similar. Put the bullet in the chuck, put Brasso on a piece of cloth, and turn on the drill.
Okay, having said that. Brasso contains ammonia, which will attack brass. However, if you wipe off it off till it's dry you should be okay. I've done this without problem more than once.
Or, if you are a reloader and have a vibratory cleaner, toss the ammo into that and turn it on for a bit. That should clean it right off.
Again, there will be naysayers against doing this. I've been reloading for 40 years and I have either tumble polished or vibratory polished my loaded ammo and never had a problem.

Why not knock off the heavy, loose stuff with a scotch brite pad and run it through a vibratory tumbler?

So I opened the rest and went to the range. Out of the 300rnds maybe 40 looked so bad that I just put them aside. I shot 120 in an M1A and it funtioned flawlessly.
Now I see Korean 80's millsurp showing up!

Back around '00 or '01 Turner's sold 30cal cans of Malaysian 7.62 linked ammo @ 180rds for $39.99. I bought several and still have at least one or two still linked.

Granted, I live in the IE where there's generally low humidity year round. No tarnish after almost twenty years of storage in my garage, and never had a dud from any of the boxes.

I had a bunch of those M60 cans, but I got robbed. I got some of it back when one of them were caught, and the idiots de-linked it.

Mine were intact belts though, including tracers.
                              (not in CA obv)
