I worked for utility during a very large wildfire. Nearly every burned house footprint had a burned gun. All were called in and "confiscated" by the SO. That may figure into any figure.

I read something to this effect. Many of the guns were found in alleys and abandoned houses and never reclaimed by anyone. The actual number of functional guns taken away from normal folks was probably smaller.

In total they had 552 confiscated according to NOPD.

NOPD lied because they got caught for not returning them later. There were multiple shipping containers FULL of confiscated firearms in NO. Gun-rights folks sued, and then what was left of the guns was turned over, pretty much 100% ruined by rust and not being properly stored. I'm sure some anti-gunners in the NO city government got their jollies from that one.

Keep in mind also that NOPD was not the only agency operating in the area and taking guns.

As far as the cops being "too busy".. get real. It's already been shown that at least at the state level, they are more than happy to NOT deal with real violence problems in order to go after gun owners. APPS, anyone? Yeah, they might have some minor offense or whatever, but let's face it, they're not chasing the hard-core bad guys who might be harder to arrest.
