DIY Indoor Shooting (BB & pellet)

Any suggestions? I want to teach my kid the basics of guns and shooting. BB & pellet guns are a good way to get his feet wet. I can't practice with him outdoors since I recently found out that firing bb & pellet guns is illegal (unless at a shooting range). Dafuq? Anyways my neighbor is a rat and he might report us and the Nazis at CPS would love to get their claws on my child. He's still too young for the range and might freak out. Besides, with suicide at the range on the rise, the last thing I'd want my child to see is some guy blowing brain chunks all over the place.

I have a hallway inside my house that's about 15 feet long. Nothing to break, no glass. Just cabinet doors that I don't care much about. Would plywood and foam on top be a good target? I want to minimize ricochet. Of course there will be the proper eye protection.

How about making a box of TBD dimensions with an angled back and sand at the bottom to catch BBs. You can hang a target up front and the angled back should gently ricochet any BBs into the sand.

Good idea. I was thinking of a flat board so it folds and tucks away easily. Maybe I can make what you said collapsible

First, suicide at ranges is not "on the rise". I'm sure you have zero statistics to support that. It may be that YOU are recently more aware but, that doesn't mean there are not LESS suicides at ranges today than there were a few years ago.

Next, if shooting an airgun in your backyard is illegal, shooting one inside your house is illegal as well. Coming here to ask how to commit a crime is not acceptable. Also, kids talk and your nosy neighbor or another person might overhear something and decide to report you.

Finally, do NOT shoot a BB gun at a plywood backstop. That's just plain stupid and will only enhance ricochets unless, you're talking about covering it with a 3" layer of florists foam or the like. Instead, I would suggest using a cardboard box with a piece of carpet hanging close to the back of the box. Of course, only use this where it would be legal to do so.

In many cities and incorporated areas throughout the entire country, shooting an air gun, BB gun, air soft, blow gun, slingshot, etc. is the same as discharging a firearm. In fact, many of those local laws are worded in such ways as to include nerf guns.

Legality varies from county to county. You have to check your local municipal code.

For example in San Diego -
Other than in the defense of person or property, it shall be unlawful for any person to shoot, fire or discharge any pistol, revolver, shotgun, rifle or any other firearm or device fired or discharged by explosives, or air gun or air rifle in any portion of the unincorporated territory of the County within that portion of the County of San Diego described....

I wouldn't shoot a pellet gun inside your house.

Pellets are made of lead and you have a small child. Confined lead exposure is not good for your son's brain development. Whatever lead mist that settles throughout the house will likely remain unless you wipe every surface down including the walls and ceiling with lead neutralizing solution. You'll also have to wash all the sheets. If you have carpets you're sort of screwed.

Go find a nice outdoor area in the countryside where it's legal. Make it a day outing. He'll fondly remember those versus shooting in the hall of the house. You don't want him growing up thinking it's OK to shoot guns in the hallway.

Aside from legalities, I've seen people shoot a BB gun at a trap in the house. Is it wise? Answer is obvious. A Daisy Red Rider will punch through drywall like butter, and will also go right through a hollow wood door.

That being said, a couple years ago I ran across a guy that made his own trap with a clipboard, a wooden box, and duct seal putty. I made one myself and I shoot the BB gun at it, works great. VERY quiet, no gong-ing of steel like a Pyramid Air or Champion Steel Trap. I get to practice my trigger control and work on small groups, surprisingly at 10 feet it's pretty easy to get 10 shots to group at 3/8" or less, and I once got a 5 shot group to go through the same hole. Word of warning, a Daisy rifle will blow right through a hard wood clipboard like nothing, so be careful. DO NOT SHOOT a Pellet Gun at these home made traps! I have a cheap Ruger Break-Action Pellet gun and even at 40 feet it went through 2 inches of Duct Seal Putty and stopped against the wood back of the box.

                          Not mine, but same style.

When my dad taught me to shoot it was with a spring airsoft 1911, it was a bit tough to pull the slide back but I got the basic firearms safety. He just used a 5 gallon bucket with a target taped over the hole and lay it on something

Is a spring powered pistol okay in the backyard with those sticky targets? If not, I'm sure glad the state is protecting my children from my unsafe ideas.
