If hes old enough and into it for self defense, Glock 19 or 23 depending on preference. Spend the rest on ammo and range time or a class! And a stripped lower.

Bottom line, he should get the gun he's the most interested in, as stated above. What kind of shooting does he enjoy the most? With the slightly increased price of 22 LR these days, and the fact that the recoil is so nonexistent that it doesn't even count for practice for larger calibers IMO, I'd say skip the 22 LR rifle/handgun.

for $800 he should get at least two, maybe three, that cover most uses and wont be declared illegal by any peoples democratic republic. something 22. something revolver. something shotgun. you choose which type and caliber.

We all know there is going to be a first pistol, first shotgun, and first rifle/AR. Which of those to get first really depends on his needs, wants and motivations. Everyone has an opinion on what a first gun should be. But I think the first gun should be whatever he is interested in. He's much more likely to stay involved in this sport/hobby if he gets something that speaks to HIM.

well o.p. did ask for opinions... anyway, maybe im too cautious but since o.p. is in calif., i worry bigly about his first love ar/ak or semiauto pistol of this year being legislated out of existence next year. heck the mass. a.g. didn't even bother with the commonwealth's silly old legislature to on-her-own mandate away "assault rifles."
