Kodiak gun safe feedback

That's not a safe; it's a residential security container with 12 ga steel. You can buy any 12ga steel cabinet for basically the same level of protection and save yourself $500-600 in the process.
See this thread for more details. Hope this info helps you OP, just trying to save you some $.Crime rate per 100k peopleOriginally posted by MitchThe architects of the assault weapon bans ... are simply trying to fight the Culture War. And we can't win, not in California anyway because you guys, the ones with the most to lose, refuse to do what you need to do to win the Culture Wars, which is to make Calguns and the gun rights community a truly big tent and stop driving people away simply because they are different from you.

Thank you! I'll check out that link. Also found this which wasn't a great endorsement for the product. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQTs...U#action=shareThat's not a safe; it's a residential security container with 12 ga steel. Stuff like that keeps the housekeeper from stealing your spare cash and prescription drugs, and more importantly it keeps kids from your guns and meets the DOJ requirements. Far better than nothing, but it's a long ways from being a "safe".
If that's your budget, just get the one from Costco for half that price and hide it in a closet. That and a monitored alarm system will deter the casual crook because provided your alarm is screaming in his ear it will be tough to keep your composure and break into it. But if someone gets past the alarm then it's about a 10 minute speed bump depending on location and mounting.Buy made in USA whenever possible.Comment

As others have said, it's not a "safe".
I really wouldn't try skimp on a safe. How much are your guns worth? What if they get stolen and are used in a crime and the victim sues you since the perp doesn't have any money? How much in lawyers bills?
Seriously, give Sturdy Safe a call and see what they can do for you.

Originally posted by ACfixerBest I can tell, Sturdy Safe is really kind of where you want to start. It's hard to compare apples and apples but I spent $3K on my Browning and to be honest it doesn't offer what Sturdy does at least on the security end of it. The Browning has a prettier paint job, but yeah... we all know what that's worth in the end. My Browning is a pretty locker, it's not a "safe" either.
Talk to the CEO, explain the differences and compare the options.
Thank you all. Appreciate the feedback and input.

I have an older Kodiak safe and it's fantastic, but like anything built 20+ years ago, it's kind of Apples and Oranges.
Mine isn't "fireproof" and doesn't have the "super thick door." What it does have is like 1/4" thick steel on all four sides, and a little more than that on the door.
I had another 1/4" of hardened steel added to the top and sides but even before that, it was a thousand times more sturdy than the new stuff.
Now, to be fair, it was a 20 year old safe and I still had to pay like $800 for it. Steel cost money. Composites don't. Save your money and buy something with steel, as much as you can afford.Comment

Not that you are getting it OP, but unless I missed something on that page, it's not $1100, it's $1999. That is a big difference.
Something I believe you should look for in a safe, no matter which company or which model. Find out their warranty. A lot of safe companies require that you pay to ship it to them when it needs to go to the factory. If it is a particularly heavy safe, expect to pay a lot. Some also, in addition to that, require that you obtain 2 or 3 estimates from a local safe expert. If you don't, they won't work on it.
One more thing, if you intend on bolting it onto your foundation, whether in the garage or inside, please make sure to ascertain if you have a post tension slab or not. Those foundations have cables in the middle of the slab that are under very high tension. Drill in the wrong place and you might be injured or dead.
Read this excellent thread on the subject by member John Browning:
I realize none of the pics in his thread show up due to photobucket's change of policy, but that's ok since they deal with a project he was showing as a DIY. You'd have to contact him for a fix on that.Last edited by retired; 09-11-2017, 7:57 PM.Comment
