    Enfield No4 MkII keyholing

Took out my Enfield no4 mkII for the first time and about 1/2 of the shots would keyhole.

I did not seem to matter if it was old surplus ammo or new factory loads

I am no expert and would like some advise based on the pictures.

    Thanks in advance

      Surplus is unknown

Not sure what you mean by "bore leaded"

This thing was glued together with vintage cosmo. I had to leave it out in 100 degree heat just to get the parts to move in order to strip and clean it. Bore looks pretty good but is not shiny, lots of scrubbing with brush and cleaner.

      Thanks

Means the bore could be lined with lead. And the grooves are not grabbing the bullet and causing it to spin.
        Start scrubbing the barrel

        Opps. Saw the cleaning remark.

Wipe-out foaming cleaner. Then Sweets 7.62 or Barnes CR-10. Then butches bore shine. Then spray the bore with brake clean spray. Then Kano Kroil oil or a 50/50 mix of Kroil oil and Shooters Choice bore solvent and stand it on the muzzle overnite or several hours.
Then a brass brush followed by more patches. Then spray with brake clean spray and start over until really clean.
I had a Russian that you could barely see any rifling. Thought the barrel was toast. Did the above steps a number of times and found out that it had good rifling.
Do not allow the sweets 7.62 or the Barnes CR-10 to stay in the bore more than 15 min each time. The wipe out leave in the barrel several hours. The Kroil oil or 50/50 mix can stay in for several days but if you do run a brush thru followed by several dry patches and then more oil each day or 1/2 day to help lift out the most crud.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

              I like lewis lead remover.

              Heat the barrel.
Stick a cotton wad or ball in the breach.
Pour a ounce of lewis. Plug the muzzle. Spin the rifle and rock it a bit.
The bathe the length of he barrel
              Pull the plugs
Go to work with cooper brush and push rod.
              Repeat.

Heating the barrel. I have used an old cleaning rod. Leave a length of it out the barrel. Placed it on the stove element It heats ups quick and push it in
              Wait. Then instill the liquid.

I second this one. Get some aggressive solvent and leave it soaking overnight Then when you think it's clean, clean it some more. I had a mosin that I would clean and clean and clean. It seemed like everytime I cleaned more and more crap would come off the barrel. And I'm not talking about scrubbing with anything, just solvent and patches. Literally took years of cleaning and shooting for this to stop.

The trouble is it is not just lead build up.
If that were the case plug the barrel and fill with mercury like old school.
It is a combination of powder (carbon), jacket material and lead.

If you have the money the Otters Foul Out system works well I am told.

But the steps I posted will do it quite well. They also work well when you are going to start shooting copper bullets after shooting regular jacketed bullets for some time in a barrel.

Maybe I'm old fashioned but Sweet's 7.62 does it for me. It's nasty stuff, though, so make sure you work with it in an extremely well ventilated area, and wear a mask and rubber gloves.

You'll be surprised at the sheer amount of gunk it pulls out of your barrel.

Thanks for the great advice. Will get some of those items and apply elbow grease and keep you advised. This rifle had so much dried cosmo on it, I spent like and hour cleaning it enough to get the mag out.

I use Sweets7.62 in my garage and no need for mask and gloves. I do keep a rag close by to wipe the rod and my hands if needed. I wipe the rod before using a different solvent/oil in all cases. I also wipe the cleaning rod after each pass.
A bit of common sense and not having the sky is falling mindset and you do not need gloves/mask.
