Weapons Testing at China Lake

My dad was an Aviation Ordnanceman AO.
"Aviation Ordnanceman are aircraft armament (weapons) specialists in charge of storing,
servicing, inspecting and handling of all types of weapons and ammunition carried on Naval aircraft.
Navy planes carry guns, bombs, torpedoes, rockets, and missiles to attack the enemy on the sea,
under the sea, in the air, and on land."
My mom helped him pass his nuclear weapons classes.
She always claimed that she promptly forgot everything after his class was through...Real Californian... -
If any of you get a chance to go inside NAWSCL, check out the museum there. The Sidewinder, Phoenix, and other missiles were designed and made there and they have a lot of the prototypes or early designs and testing equipment. Also a few torpedoes, all stainless and the counter rotating props are SHARP as hell. I got to see some really neat stuff while doing Subcontracting work there.
The base commander also happens to be an avid off-road enthusiast, he would have a few F-18's buzz the race course at Spangler right next to the base. Usually the big 250 race out there is when he'll have a few "training missions" in the vicinity.Last edited by Illumi Naughty; 09-02-2017, 12:38 PM.Comment

Those drones fired at :40 are the same that the Navy's been using for decades.
They used to shoot those off at Pt. Mugu NAS and out to sea.
There was a reward offered painted right on the side of the drone "$500 reward to return this drone to the Pt. Mugu NAS"
I found one at sea while in the Coast Guard. Myself and my two crewmembers busted our butts hauling it aboard our 41' SAR patrol boat and then took it to Pt. Mugu.
What a gyp! They said the reward was intended for civilians, not fellow military. Didn't get a dime!
Hell, it was a hazard to navigation, I couldn't leave it floating out there, but the thought of $500, that was a lot of money to us back in those days.
