Going Shooting Out of State

So I'm planning on taking a road trip from CA to TX and making a stop in AZ to visit friends and go shooting. I'm going to bring a few rifles and handguns with me so we can shoot in both states, AZ and TX. My question is, how hard is it (if hard at all) to buy standard capacity magazines as a CA resident? I.E. - I go to a LGS in said state(s) before going out to the range to buy standard cap mags, they ask for ID and I show a CA DL, will I be denied sale? I have ZERO intention of bringing them back to CA, but I know they may think otherwise. I would just leave them out of state with friends before heading back.

Just wondering if others have had experience buying magazines or gun parts out of state. I may be overthinking it.

Why do you need to show an ID to buy a magazine?

It is not illegal to possess or purchase standard capacity (i.e. high capacity) magazines in most of the states surrounding California. It would only be illegal to bring them back into California with you. You can purchase these magazines in Arizona. However, each individual store may or may not have a policy regarding selling these magazines to someone presenting a California ID card. This would only be an issue if they actually asked for an ID card at the check-out counter. If you are concerned about it, I would just have one of your friends make the purchase for you.

My guess is that most of the gun stores that border California (Havasu, Reno, Yuma) probably have more strict policies about these things than stores further inland (Phoenix, Vegas, Tucson) or stores in states that don't border California at all.

Only speakin from NV and OR but I have never been carded or asked where I live. Not in boarder towns either. You should be fine. Just done bring them back

Here in Texas you'll be just fine. Store inventory and cash have only ever been my limits.

A suggestion- order them online and have them shipped to a friends house or held at a UPS facility. Way cheaper. $9 for a Pmag is all you should be paying.

my first week in NV i bought a couple of 20 round magazines for my AR15 - still had my CA license so i had my brother with me, just in case

they rung me up and i paid, never asked for any kind of ID

I've never had to show ID to purchase any magazine in CA, why would you in a free state?

I have heard that if you use your CC and show your ID some busybody clerks will try and tell you you cannot buy mags etc. being a CA resident. That is completely false, as there is absolutely no law on who can and cannot purchase what outside of CA, and the clerk has no idea if you are returning to CA or have moved there, and if someone tries that get their manager in front of you pronto.
There are some limitations on actual firearms purchases, for example in CO you can buy a long gun if you are from out of state, but I believe CA residents are prohibited from doing so as it circumvents the DROS and registration policy.

Mags, parts, etc. are no issue. Have fun.
