Shopping for my first .45. Want a 5" barrel, and get one on a budget. Use will be on the range, purely for fun. Must be made in USA or Germany.

Right now, an unnamed gun store starting with T offers the Springfield 1911 Mil-Spec with 5" barrel for $639.98. That's pretty affordable.

From there on up, there are several Springfield 1911 models, but I really don't know what to look for in regard to "should have" or what's purely luxury. A Sig 1911 is already $999.00, so quite a bit more expensive.

What should I look for when purchasing my first 1911?

Kimber Custom II is a nice budget model. I've seen them on sale locally for under $700, which is what I bought mine on gunbroker for. You get the niceties of a beavertail grip safety, match barrel and trigger, for a couple hundred less than you would pay on another makers gun. If you want classic Govt issue type 1911, a Springfield GI model will do, for about the same price as the Custom II, or a little less.

There is also the HK USP, which is a great gun, and can be had on sale for $800. I see them in our marketplace for a lot less than that, with not much wear. Worth a look.

I have a Ruger Lightweight Commander that I carry. It had all the swag except night sites that I replaced. I think I payed $700ish all said and done. I cast and reload for it as well.

I'm a snob but, over the last few years, every time I pick up a RIA I am more impressed. Honestly I think the new ones are better than the Colts and I have a rather extensive collection. If Colts including my first born son.

Unfortunately, they are now off-Roster.
They were removed from the Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale on 07-26-2016.

However, the Citadel M1911-A1 FS (MSRP $609) and Taylor's Tactical M1911-A1-FS (MSRP $520) are variants of the Rock Island Armory 1911 Tactical (the markings are different) and it is currently on the Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale.

Rock Island Armory, Citadel, and Taylor's Tactical are all made by Armscor.

Both (Rock Island Armory and Taylor's Tactical) are made by Armscor.

Isn't there a Citadel model on the roster now?

Pretty much the same features as the Tactical.
