    Cleaning shooting coat...dry cleaners???

Looking to get my creedmoor shooting coat cleaned. It's a bit ripe...I know, I should have worn a long sleeve undershirt but I didn't for years.

Anyone taken their shooting coat to dry cleaners? If so anyone know a good place in south sf Bay Area? I tried using warm water and detergent hand wash and rinse with garden hose but it still stinks.

    Pic of coat attached.

Shoot and Reload with the Pros! Creedmoor Sports has served the Precision Shooting Community for over 40 years in Centerfire, Small-bore, Air Rifle and Pistol Disciplines.

The only way to clean your coat is with a mild detergent (Woolite) and water. Spray the coat down lightly and scrub it inside and out. Rinse it off lightly and allow to air dry. Do not Dry Clean! Soak in water! Or try any other method of cleaning! You will only damage the coat and have to buy a new one.
After you clean it, wear a hooded sweatshirt underneath it when you shoot. Even in the dead of summer. People say it is hot, but trust me, sweating into the sweatshirt is more comfortable than sweating directly into the coat. I prefer a hooded sweatshirt because I use the hood to wipe off any sweat on my neck/face/head and don't have to hunt for a towel.

To get rid of odors, put the jacket in a sealed container and put some vinegar in an open container and let them sit overnight. Be careful not to spill the vinegar. I used this technique to deodorize my house after my dog had a meeting with Pepe Le Pew, and I use it to also deodorize my car.

Putting a Creedmore coat in a washing machine or through a dry cleaning process, would cause me concern that it would take out the stiffness of the jacket. Wear a sweatshirt underneath the jacket from now on.

I washed my first one pretty deeply in the tub with Tide. Spin cycle to shake out the water and hung to dry. Hung it outside with a fan under it. Put some bent coathangers to keep the arms open for airflow. Worked fine. Maybe consider a shop vac to extract as much water from the material.

I've used the vinegar soak for deodorizing stuff in the washer, don't see why a Hardback wouldn't benefit from vinegar in the wash solution. Bacteria from your sweat is causing the odor.

As for worries of losing the "stiffness" of the coat, think about how stiff a towel or shirt gets when you hang it to dry.

Thanks for the link to creedmoor. That's what I did first like I said but it didn't really help...even though they said no dry cleaning I figured it may be an option.

Did you add vinegar to the detergent and water mixture? I think that's what I need to do. I need to get a big tub and let it soak and I can agitate by hand.

I got the coat used second hand for $80 when I used to shoot highpower matches. Who knows when the last time is it was cleaned before my first attempt last night.

I didn't use vinegar on the coat, just soap. I have used vinegar on mildewed towels and our son's lacrosse gear. Seems to work well. My first coat was a very used coat like yours also. It benefited from the cleaning.

I used warm water, detergent, a little dish soap, and a bit of vinegar. Soaked it all in a big tub. It's drying right now, smell seems to be much less terrible. I rinsed in in the tub a few times too.

Might have to do it again. I'm not looking forward to using that sweatshirt under it! I have the super sweaty Southern European/Mediterranean genetics...

I hear you on it being hot, but you will be hot regardless if it's a long sleeve T or your sweatshirt over a regular t-shirt. Anyways, it's "only" 22 minutes....of torture.

My coat took a long soak; needing a couple hours with vigorous brushing.

This is the same method I use for my trap shooting vest and gloves, which can get very ripe as I shoot 2 to 3 times a week.

A shotgun shooting vest is smaller than your coat so I filled a bucket with water, add Tide and wash it in the bucket. Flush and clean with warm water, hand wring it a little and then hang up to dry with a clothes hanger.

If it still stinks, try adding baking soda powder and soak the coat overnight in a bucket or tub with Tide in it. I use the HE variety as that's what my washer uses, might have an effect on your coat too.

...and it keeps hot brass from sizzling on your neck. It also helps damp your pulse to the sling.

Was scoring a guy the other week who was using an AR308. His hot brass kept landing on his neighbor's neck...

I checked creedmoor website first, but like I said it didn't quite do the trick so I was wondering if it could be dry cleaned, even though they said not to. I figured it's possibly like a car owners manual, "always obey posted speed limits..." yeah, sure.

The detergent, vinegar, and a squirt of dish soap did the job.
