Firearm Question SF

Hi All,

I just had a quick question.

A friend of mine has a lady friend who lives in the Presidio area of SF.

She is having a problem with a local meth head who is breaking into cars and now is trying to break into apartments and homes in the area.

Most recently he tried to break into this ladies house.

The guy has been arrested over 72 times and charges have been dropped every time.

The lady is starting to fear for her safety. She spoke to local law enforcement and was told she cannot buy a firearm because the Presidio sit on federal land.

Does anyone know if there is any truth behind this? Or maybe you cannot own a gun in SF(I do not know what crazy laws they have out there)?

I know, she should move, but that isn't in the cards right now.

My interpretation - if you live there in a private residence, you can own and keep firearms.

You cannot use them however at the Presidio (duh, there's nowhere to legally shoot anyway).

You cannot bring them into Federal buildings there.

Welcome other interpretations.

The Presidio was transferred to the National Park Service in 1994 and is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreational Area.

In 2010 President Obama signed a law allowing loaded firearms in national parks, so you friend should be able to possess a firearm in The Presidio. If she wants to be sure she should consult a knowledgeable lawyer or the National Park Service.

Meth heads will believe anything. Tell the meth head you hid drug money in the middle lane of a nearby freeway. All black outfit must be worn and go in the middle of the freeway around 2am.

OP, I thing one or more postings above have cleared things up for you. I am willing to bet there are some gun owners already living in the Presidio. it's
unfortunate your lady friend is having that situation present in what many would think is such a scenic area to live in. Perhaps it was not best to ask the SFPD officer about buying a gun. The SF elected officials have quite a anti-gun view and you are likely to see that reflected to a certain extend within SFPD (not saying every officer). There are no gun shops in SF......but, your lady friend will not have to travel far at all from SF to find several shops to choose from...

I believe there is a headquarter in the Presidio for the Park Rangers, so she can check with them. The Park rangers patrol the presidio and they are armed federal officers.

Does she have any experience with firearms? If she does go that route hopefully she will take some training to get competent with it and secures it well. She has already had her place almost broken into by this guy, would hate for her gun to end up on the street so this methhead could use it on somebody.

I've had guns for a long time and feel very comfortable around them but I can't imagine how an SF liberal would feel getting one with the specific purpose of having to use it to possibly kill someone in self defense with little experience and knowledge of firearms. Sounds like a tall order. Owning a firearm is a right and with that right comes great responsibility. I hope she doesnt get a gun bring it home and throw it in the sock drawer thinking she is all ready to defend herself.

at the very least she should be well armed with tasers, baseball bats, bear spray, kitchen knives, cast iron frying pans, etc. whatever she can legally get her hands on that will do some serious damage to an unsuspecting meth addict..

i'm not telling her to break the law (i don't even know what the law is at her residence), but if i were in her position, i would buy a 12 or 20 gauge - whatever she can comfortably shoot. better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6...

Well in SF any form of self defense is basically illegal.

I read someone else suggest using Easy Off Oven Spray as an alternative. Not sure if they make smaller cans of it. Just make sure the spray doesn't blow back in the wind into your own face.. SF can get rather windy at times..

Maybe suggest to the meth head to run for Mayor. Even if he won, he would'nt be any worse than the last one.

Federal law prohibits firearms in certain facilities in this park; those places are posted with signs at all public entrances. This prohibition includes those possessing a valid State of California CCW permit. In other words, all persons, regardless of the state permit that has been issued to them, are prohibited from carrying any firearm in federal facilities. In Golden Gate National Recreation Area (including Alcatraz Island), Fort Point National Historic Site, and Muir Woods National Monument, this includes all administrative buildings, non-residential buildings,...

Residential buildings do not appear to have such prohibitions.

You can own guns in SF. She can keep guns in her residence.
