Shooting Locations (desert or mountains) Suggestions

I visit the Los Angeles Outdoor Shooting range (in Tejunga Canyon Rd.) often but would like to shoot my rifle faster than one shot per second. I have never gone to shoot anywhere in the desert or mountainside and am looking for a legal place to shoot outdoors without having to pay and have restrictions (Really want to try bump firing). I would appreciate any suggestions for legal locations as well as what you recommend I should bring with me (i.e. water, 4WD vehicle, table, etc..)

Specific locations/maps are appreciated. Affordable metal target suggestions are also appreciated (for 5.56, 7.62x39, and .308)

Very few places in the mountains of So. Cal. any more. Most of it is Forest Service controlled. Most of the rest ( BLM ) has restrictions on it for fire season unless you are out in real desert. I'm in Riverside and as far as I know everything except pay ranges are closed locally. I guess if you go far enough, mainly the desert you may find someplace.

If its worth a long drive to do what you want, You my find Arizona does not have the issues California does. Otherwise you are pretty basically screwed like the rest of us. Yes there are places you can go in California, but nothing local for all the reasons stated above.

FIRE season. don't even think about right now.
its hard to keep up with the restricted areas right now.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

I stopped trying to go out to the desert in California a long time ago and just started going outside of Vegas. Very easy and there are spots less than 30 minutes away from the city.

Look up Hodge Road by Barstow. There is legal shooting in the area, and IIRC no fire restrictions there. Bring water, shade, friends, and a trash bag.

Anywhere there? This place seems interesting. What's the best spot on that road ?

                    Exactly

OP, head north on the 15 to the 395, go past Kramer Junction about 10+ miles, stay on the east side, less RVer's over there. Make sure you have a back stop.
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

When you exit off the 15n on Hodge it will be across on the other side of the 15. If you're not sure....just pull over. If you're on the wrong side you can see the people on the other side lined up. It's a dirt road a couple hundred yards long to the first embankment that most seem to shoot against. When I went there about 6 months ago there was about 25 cars lined up about 10 yards apart each. Some more some less. You can't miss it.

Go early as it got blown out from the wind about 1pm and we left by 2.
