Road trip up to Oregon.

I'll be driving up toward the end of the week. Any suggestions on places between say Redding and Salem to do some target shooting? I'm looking for an outdoor pistol range or two. While I won't be in a huge hurry, I do need to get up to Portland and back, so I don't want to stray too far off of I-5.

There is a gun show in Portland July 29-30 http://www.collectorswest.com/
The summer shows are usually smaller than other times of the year but might still be interesting for someone from California. You can fondle a bunch of off-roster handguns on the tables and see hundreds of "high capacity" magazines for sale.

There will also be a military vehicle show and swap meet there

Try shooting dunndeal a PM. He lives on the way, in Jackson County. I live on the coast so don't know the inland stuff. We shoot on our own properties over there. I'll be back up for the eclipse. Have a safe trip!

I recommend you check out the Josephine County Sportsman Association shooting range at Merlin/ Grants Pass (exit 61). It's right off the 5 and it's a beautiful complex with several very nice ranges. I think it's $7 or $10 per day to shoot if you're not a member. I spend the better part of a day there when I go to visit my brother, who lives just down the road.

There is a BLM shooting range in Redding near Keswick. It is not exactly an easy on off, but not that difficult either. Current fire restrictions in place so shooting only a half hour before sunrise to noon, and you must have a fire extinguisher or shovel with you. All other standard BLM restrictions apply including no steel targets.

Redding also has nice shot indoor shooting range. Good range, and good people there that run it. $15 lane rental plus they have a decent selection of fire arms to rent if you are wanting to shoot something else.

Made the trip a bit earlier in the week than originally planned. Visited four ranges (three outdoor, one indoor), two on the way up, two on the way back. I'll recommend stopping at any of them.

Our first stop was just north of Grants Pass at Josephine County Sportsman Association http://www.jcsa-gunrange.com/Home.php Beautiful, sprawling facility. Very park like. It even includes an old western town. Lots of other options including archery, skeet and trap.

The next day we visited Tritac Shooting Range in Salem https://tritacshooting.com/. Very good experience. This is a very modern & clean facility, There's an emphasis on safety and customer service. I wasn't looking to shoot indoors, but this is a great place and I'll visit again.

Took care of business in Portland and headed back south. Almost as an afterthought, we decided to check out Emerald Empire Gun Club http://www.emeraldempiregunclub.com/ just east of Eugene, and SO glad we did! This was my absolute favorite stop on the trip. Spent about 2 1/2 hours there. Fantastic facility, great/friendly/knowledgeable staff. If I lived up there they'd get sick of seeing me. The facility is immaculate.

We got back on the road and pulled off at Canyonville to take a look at South Umpqua Rod & Gun Club http://www.surgc.org/index.html Not intending to shoot, just to scout it out for next time. The club is at the end of a long (maybe a mile?) gravel road. We pulled in and there was no staff, just one guy on the rifle range. I walked over to the pistol range and saw that its an honor system - you use the facility, clean up after yourself and drop a five in the dropbox. I figured what the hell, paid, grabbed a target, blasted some holes, cleaned up brass and was on my way in 15 minutes. Ha! Cool, I liked it! No frills, just be a good guest.

Again, I'd recommend any of these and hope to visit all of them again. Met some really nice folks and had a great time!

Sounds like you had a great experience! I'm glad you had a nice time....I grew up in southern Oregon, Washington state, and California family brought me back to this state after I got out of the service or I'd be gone. Lots of ranges up there and yeah they use the honor system at a lot of places. Most of the time you have the range to yourself unlike down here it's a little ridiculous.
