    Identity theft and DROS?

Unfortunately I was the victim of identity theft a couple days ago. It was a smash and grab while I was diving.
I had my wallet locked in the glovebox, but they got it along with all my credit cards DL and worse, my SS Card.
know better and almost never carry my SS card with me, we all slip now and then.

My question if anyone knows, since they got my SS number I had to file a claim with the big 3 credit bureaus, it stops anyone from applying for credit/loans in my name without them contacting me first.
I was planning to buy a shield 9mm this weekend and take advantage of the rebate.

Will the hold on credit or any of the other reports or claims affect my DROS?
I would think not, but thought I would ask rather than having to pay the hefty restocking fee's most LGS charge if someone fails DROS. TIA.

How are you going to buy a firearm without an actual Calif drivers license in hand?
Do you have a Calif ID card?

The info you supplied the credit bureaus does not effect any other issues, such as firearms purchase.
    Poke'm with a stick!

Went thru this three years ago. Locking up hour credit rating has nothing to do with DROS. But you will need your DL. Temporary wont work.
Since they got your SS#, pay the extra to keep it locked for the year. The free one time deal is only for 90 days.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

Wouldn't a passport or passport card work?

Ahh, right! We're in Kalifornia! I was thinking I would use my passport, but it's not a state issued ID. I guess it's a mute point until they mail me my new one.

Thanks! I guess I'll just use the money to keep buying ammo!

Thanks, I'm sorry that happened to you, it sure can turn your life upside down!

I was wondering about that 90 days, I will definitely extend it.

See if your LGS will let you buy it, and store it for you until you can DROS it.

just wondering why you had your SS card in your wallet?

mine never leaves the house unless i'm going to a government building for something that i know would require showing the card. other wise it stays home and locked with the guns.

Somehow someone got my SSN without even having my SS card anyways, so it doesn't really matter. www.lifelock.com. I signed up for their higher level package through the NRA promotion and let them do the monitoring for me. It's not much monthly for peace of mind.

Hey buddy I was in similar situation 8 years ago.
Good thing you have contacted 3 credit bureaus.
However, even though your credit record is on "fraud alert" (calling you before anybody uses ur information), companies do not have obligation to alert you.
Fraud alert is basically like asking companies/credit bureau to contact you if somebody is trying to open an account or etc.
However, they have no obligation and they don't have to call you.
Here are the steps I recommend.
                    1) Call credit bureau or visit them in person (Experian is in Costa Mesa and Trans Union is in Fullerton last time I visited in person) and set up a fraud alert. Possibly freeze your account (that is what I did).
                    2) Make a police report. This is very important. If there is any discrepancy in your credit report, in order to fix them, you will need a police report.
                    3) Monitor credit report and update police report if necessary.
I know this is a very stressful situation...I have been there.
                    Everything will work out eventually.

Your dros will not be affected by this situation.

You want to freeze your credit. Credit monitoring and "fraud protection" is a total scam.

Credit monitoring is far from a scam, as long as you aren't getting ripped off. Getting a text/email any time you have a hard inquiry pull is the biggest advancement in identity protection I have seen to date.

My particular career has made me realize that your SSN is not as big of a secret as you think. Far more people have access to this information than you realize, and not all of them are model citizens. This isn't to say that it isnt important to protect it, but one tweaker getting your wallet isn't the end of the world, assuming you take the correct steps: Put a fraud alert with a phone number in place with all 3 bureaus (EF, EX, TU). Sign up with Credit Karma who will notify you any time TU or EX gets an inquiry (free), or pay to lock your reports.

Your biggest issues are the the fact that your physical SS card and ID are in the same hands, which can be used for fraud that doesn't necessarily involve credit-pulls. This includes opening depository accounts, obtaining short-term installment loans, payday loans, and fake check-cashing. The best way to prevent this is to lock your Chexsystems file, which is free. I would recommend doing this immediately.

Also, for the next 5 years or so, file your tax returns as quickly as you can. Refund fraud is real, and can cause massive headaches.

Passports do not have any verification of the place you live other than USA.
