Moving to California, SAM7 AK47 question

    Hello,
I know it sucks that I have to move back to California. It is because my parents needs my help. However, I have Arsenal SAM7R AK-47. I am not sure if it is a legal AK-47 where I could bring it to California and then I'll transport it to Washington state to be with my brother there.

I will have to use a professional mover truck to transport all my stuff. I learned that the truck driver will have to declare my firearms and that includes my SAM7. I don't know if it is okay to bring it through California. Should I leave it in Maryland while NRA fights the stupid California gun ban law?

Where can I get the magazine lock to install on my SAM7R to be in compliance with CA anti-gun law?

just remove the pistol grip or add a grip fin to make featureless and it'll be good to go

AK's are actually pretty easy to make CA compliant. Like said above, you just need a grip fin wrap for your pistol grip, a muzzle brake that does not suppress flash, and since you have the SAM7R, your stock should be fixed as standard. With the featureless setup, you can have a standard magazine release. Just keep your standard "high" cap magazines out of this state.

I would probably leave it in a free state. Soon the Gavin will Ascend to the throne. All bets are off after that

Unfortunately AK style magazine locks no longer meet the criteria for a "fixed magazine"

Is this a loophole to transport 12 AK standard magazines over 20 glock magazines without spring and base cover?

It looks like I will have to buy this product to bypass the assault weapon ban.

Bypass California's Assault Weapon Registration with MagLatch! The first and only fixed magazine compliance device to make AK patterned firearms California Legal, conforming with all requirements of SB 880/AB 1135. Kit includes the drop-in MagLatch AK device and tools for install. Magazine is optional, but modification of your own is required to be legal. Takes less than 5 minutes to install and there are no modifications to your firearm. MagLatch is unobtrusive and quickly reversible.

The legality of that device is uncertain due to claims that a tool can be inserted through the ejection port and used to unlock the magazine.

Currently for an AK style semi-auto rifle, it can be made CA legal by one of the following methods:
                A. Make it featureless (remove pistol grip or install grip wrap, no folding/extending stock, no vertical forward grip, no flash suppressor).
                B. Make it operate using a fixed magazine by welding/riveting a 10 round magazine into the magazine well.
                C. Make it into a manually operated (straight pull bolt-action) rifle by removing the gas-piston and blocking/plugging the gas block.

                  That would be illegal.
Since 01-01-2000, importation of large capacity magazines is illegal. [PC 32310(a)]
Since 01-01-2014, importation of large capacity magazine parts kits is illegal. [PC 32311(a)]

In order to be CA legal...
Prior to importation, large capacity magazines need to be permanently modified into 10 round magazines. [PC 16740(a)]

                  Penal Code 16740
As used in this part, “large-capacity magazine” means any ammunition feeding device with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds, but shall not be construed to include any of the following:
                  (a) A feeding device that has been permanently altered so that it cannot accommodate more than 10 rounds.
                  (b) A .22 caliber tube ammunition feeding device.
                  (c) A tubular magazine that is contained in a lever-action firearm.

                  Penal Code 32310
                  (a) Except as provided in Article 2 (commencing with Section 32400) of this chapter and in Chapter 1 (commencing with Section 17700) of Division 2 of Title 2, any person in this state who manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives, lends, buys, or receives any large-capacity magazine is punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year or imprisonment pursuant to subdivision (h) of Section 1170.

                  Penal Code 32311
                  (a) Except as provided in Article 2 (commencing with Section 32400) of this chapter and in Chapter 1 (commencing with Section 17700) of Division 2 of Title 2, commencing January 1, 2014, any person in this state who knowingly manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives, lends, buys, or receives any large capacity magazine conversion kit is punishable by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) or imprisonment in a county jail not to exceed six months, or by both that fine and imprisonment. This section does not apply to a fully assembled large-capacity magazine, which is governed by Section 32310.
                  (b) For purposes of this section, a “large capacity magazine conversion kit” is a device or combination of parts of a fully functioning large-capacity magazine, including, but not limited to, the body, spring, follower, and floor plate or end plate, capable of converting an ammunition feeding device into a large-capacity magazine.

All good advises above. Remove the pistol grip, get the AK in CA, contact Monkeeboi /his webpage with pictures is bellow/ in this forum, buy fingrip from him, install it, and you are GTG. Magazines larger than 10 rounds are illegal to be imported- either leave them out of CA, or permanently block them to 10 rounds before you bring them here.

I have decided to leave my AK in Maryland until NRA fights the stupid law.

I wouldn't get my hopes up. Since the AK is one of the easiest firearms to convert to featureless, might as well take it with you. If you see stricter laws on the horizon, you can always take it/send it(?) back.
