Gun lock with gun purchase law

So I have purchased five guns so far and on one ocassion the store told me I needed to buy a gun lock with it. I'm thinking the difference was that it happened to be a new OLL. All the other guns were used. Who else has had to buy a new lock with a gun?

I had to at Big 5 once. I think it just depends on how dumb the people are that work there. I say this cuz once at Sports Authority, I showed them my receipt and they handed me my mini 14 in the back of the store and said bye. They didn't even check my ID.
    Insert something clever here.

basically all firearms transfers in CA require you to have a gun lock, handguns and long guns. Now, for long guns, if you have a safe, you can sign a safe affivadit that exempts you from needing to buy a gun lock. but for handguns, there is competing federal law that requires you to have a gun lock as well as the state law.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

I did a PPT once and was told I would have to purchase a lock. The day came to pick up my item and no one ever confirmed whether or not I had purchased one.

I have been told the same. You need a receipt of purchase within 30 days. I said cant I just bring you the 10 locks I already have as proof. I was told no. You need to have purchased a lock within 30 days or buy a new lock. If the firearm doesnt come with a lock, important for PPT.

Yep, pretty much sums it up. As another member has also added, you need to show a receipt the lock was purchase within 30 days of pickup. What you do with the lock afterwards is your business of course.

You put the gun in the trunk and walk back into Turner's and return it.

This was for an OLL so I just needed to sign a paper saying I have a safe? I wish Irvington would have told me that. They said I had to buy a lock no matter what. I do have a safe. Sounds like they might have left out some important info. I should have thought about returning it. The law probably doesn't say anything about that.

Incredibly stupid. It's for the cccchhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiillllllllllllllldddddd dddrrrrrrrruuuuuuuunnnnnnnn.

I wish there was another box on the application that asks if there are any kids in the home. If NO, then that's the end of it, no lock, no affidavit, none of that nonsense.

It's BS that I have to buy a lock that will supposedly protect kids from my gun when I don't even have any.

I didn't have to buy a lock with either of my last two OLLs...and there was no mention of safes.

I may have had to buy one with my Mossberg, but don't remember. My 10/22 came with one. When did this ridiculous rule come about? I don't remember buying one with my P229 either, but that was a long time ago.

There are local ordinances to deal with as well. I know that the city of Livermore requires all purchasers to buy a gun lock (including stripped lowers), and the safe affidavit is not acceptable. J&R sell them at cost, but there's no denying it's a stupidly written law.

                          Passed 1999, effective 2002
AB 106, Scott. Firearms: safety devices.
Existing law generally regulates the transfer and possession of
                          firearms.
This bill would establish the Aroner-Scott-Hayden Firearms Safety
                          Act of 1999 (the act).
This bill would require that, except as provided, effective
January 1, 2002, all firearms sold or transferred in this state, or
manufactured in this state, be accompanied by a firearms safety
device approved by the Department of Justice.
The Federal version, for handguns only, passed in 2005.

Irvington nor any other dealer is required to accept a "safe affidavit"
Also most ffl's that sell you the gun and the lock or not going to take a return of the lock. Some dealers where you present a lock within a thirty day period insist on keeping the original receipt and attaching it to the dros.
