    Rusty guns

Hey guys so I recently moved to south eastern AZ... house I have had a swamp cooler and with monsoons it's pretty humid in my house... needless to say all my guns are starting to rust. I'm already planning on buying a dehumidifier for the room my safes in and a rod for the safe itself... anything else I can do? Gun socks, cases anything?

    Thanks!

Silicon gun socks and dessicant packs are good, but how humid could it get in SE Arizona?

      Goldenrod and desiccant.
Pick the right size for the cubic footage.

Get a desiccant with some form of color indicator to know when to replace or send to the oven for recharging.

Goldenrod is great.... a little heat keeps the moisture and rust away

Thanks... as far as humidity today it was at 83%... that doesn't include being inside a house with a swamp cooler... some days I've literally been able to wipe moisture of the walls...

The gun sock will not help with high humidity. Believe me, I ruined a buttplate.

Hahha... a dehumidifier. .and a swamp cooler.

Ok...save up your pennies and put a Central AC in your home. Meanwhile a goldenrod should work, lots of oil coating your guns. Dunk in cosmoline if really worried.

                  Wiping moisture off the walls?
I think you may have other problems not yet surfaced.

I'd go for a long term fix and install A/C for sure.

Move the safe into the garage.

Use portable fans in the house to move the air around more.

Golden rod or a low watt incandescent bulb in the safe.

Putting AC in isn't exactly an option as it's not my house... 4 months left of this lease and I can't wait for it to be over... i guess it's good news the swamp machine broke last night filling the rooms with smoke at 3am... it's now 92 degrees in my house, nice and enjoyable.

                        Thanks for the tips guys!

Goldenrod and good coats of quality gun oil. I like Hoppes or Outers. Rem Oil, while handy, doesn't seem to do as well.

Swamp coolers are pretty effective cooling equipment for dry climates of the west and southwest. Arid climates have very low relative humidity levels out doors and that works for swamp coolers. when using an evaporator cooling technique, each time you drop the temperature 20 degrees you double the relative humidity.

If you start out with 95 degree F and a relative humidity of 25%, the swamp cooler can get you 75 degrees and 50% relative humidity. That humidity level is still pretty comfortable.

If you start out with 95 degrees and 40% rel. humidity. The swamp cooler is working harder to get the 75 degrees and you may be up to 80 - 85% relative humidity. You probably don't want to get the humidity much above 55%.
Also, you MUST have flow-through ventilation (i.e. an partially open window for the moist air to flow towards) with an evap cooler or it will literally turn into a swamp in your home regardless the outside humidity.
