    Max DROS Fee?

    Hey guys,

Has anyone been charged more than $35 for a private party transfer? I just got done with one at a shop that I had not been to under the new ownership and they charged me $36. When I asked them about the extra $1 the guy said it was for "paper and ink". I was under the impression that they couldn't charge more than $35/DROS, but could they add it on as "an administrative fee", or are they breaking regulations?

    Thanks

Lots of posts on this. Yes they overcharged you a buck. If they did not charge you a 20 buck lock fee then you got lucky.(LOL) What ffl did this dastardly deed?

It is illegal to over charge on the specific DROS and transfer fee but some FFLs can charge a dealer fee for whatever which is not illegal so long as it is a seperate charge. Hence why stores like turner gets away with charging more.

Thanks guys. The shop is Far West Gun Shop in Santa Barbara. I understand that these guys might not be making money or losing money on PPTs, but charging that extra buck rubbed me the wrong way a little and I don't plan on doing much business with them after I pick up my gun. Didn't really like the vibe from the guys there and there are better gun shops closer to me in the area.

Dommypls, I'm no where near Turner's to have to deal with that bs. If I'm going to a big box store (for a long gun), I'm going to Big 5. Their selection might be limited but they only charge a $25 DROS fee.

Places like us, RifleGear, etc charge the minimum fee but in the defense of the FFL you went to, ink is getting REALLY expensive...lol

Smaller shops like us and even RifleGear charge minimal fees. I can see why other shops charge more just because the cost of running a business and paying employees can be pretty costly, but coporate chains like Turner's, Bass Pro etc. are really just trying to rake in profits. It really comes down to the shops business model whether they want to be marginal dealer or volume dealer.

Gun Owners are the worst enemy of gun owners....

Back in 1993/1994 shops were crazy busy

Then in 1995, everyone was broke and not buying guns

So a lot of shops closed.

Within reason, we need to do a better job of supporting the local shop.

I know that my ammo has been an internet item for the past 22/24 years...

Back when I had to call Eric to place an order...( for those of you old school - you know who Eric is.....)

So local shops make a lot of their profit from ammo and accessories.
Not much profit when you sell a Glock at $509-$559

Retailers use Keystone- they literally double the price on say a T- shirt. If it costs them $7.50- it goes on the shelf for $15.

                    Guns- good luck making 10%.

So find a good local shop, speak with the manager, explain why you want to shop at their store and support them.

If they are jerks, find a new store.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
                    (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

One place in visalia tried but just left. $35 should be the max but they can get around it legally.

                        ^^THIS.

Margins on most guns are absolute garbage. Accessories and Ammo are where margins are made.
