There is NEVER a requirement for secondary proof of residency.

The problem that confuse people is that for a handgun a CA ID/DL is NOT acceptable proof of residency for CA, so something else is needed. If the CA ID/DL does not have the current residence address on it, then due to Federal law, a government document is needed, but it does not mean that you have to have 2 documents.

For any firearm, under CA law you have to have a CA ID/DL or a military ID with duty orders. Without that, you can not buy a firearm regardless of what ID you have.

Proof of residency is REQUIRED for ALL firearm transfers. What is acceptable for handguns vs. long guns is different under CA law. Federal law also has requirements for proof of residency.

Part of the problem is people start talking about secondary proof of residency and those not paying close attention, including FFLs, actually think that 2 documents are needed. Stop the confusion and be accurate in what you are saying and hopefully this should end the confusion.

Many fine references to the actual law in this thread. Sometimes FFLs will carefully, accurately follow these laws. Sometimes they make up all kinds of crazy stuff. In any case you have to satisfy the FFLs requirements to buy a gun.

So talk to the FFL dealer.
