SFO to Wash DC - Virgin America with 3 revolvers - My experience

Hello All, I was concerned about my trip, so I read as much as I could on this site and others so that i could be an informed traveler. The following was my experience, hope it helps someone.

I used a pelican case, its a 2 gun case, but I managed to get three 6" revolvers into it plus a scope. I put the pelican case with 2 locks on it into my suitcase. I "locked" the suitcase with a TSA type lock. I packed some clothes around the pelican case.

1.5 hrs before my flight, I went up to the counter and declared 3 unloaded guns in a locked case. Girl behind the counter had no idea what to do, she asked for help and made at least three phone calls before directing me to an unoccupied counter area. She said someone from the TSA would be there in about 5 minutes.

TSA Dude shows up, says not to touch my luggage, gun case or to reach across the counter. I give him the keys to the TSA lock and the 2 locks on the case.

He has a special computer thing behind a locked area. He swabbed the outside of the case, and put the swab in the computer... dunno what that was about.

He then told me he was going to open the case and verify the guns were unloaded. He did a quick check without touching the weapons and "verified" they were unloaded. I signed a form that the weapons were unloaded and he put that inside the pelican and locked it back up. THen on the outside of the pelican he put a "checked by TSA" tag, then put the pelican back into the suitcase and repacked my clothes around it.

TSA guy was quick and professional, we barely spoke 10 words.

THe only thing out of the ordinary was a quarter sized orange sticker on the bag claim ticket on the exterior of my suitcase that said "TSA SECURITY CLEARED SFO. If you werent looking for it, you would not notice it.

It was a red-eye nonstop flight, picked up my suitcase in Wash DC, all locks intact. No issues.

THis will be my final post here as I am now a mid-atlantic dweller... I have not posted much here, but have read and lurked and learned much. Thanks Calguns!!!

I know you can do it, but the whole concept of your suitcase coming out of the luggage conveyor belt with no security around is unnerving. It should at least go to the oversized luggage counter where a person could at least compare your baggage claim tags.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, you're doing it all wrong.

Last time I saw a swab testing machine it was testing for explosives after 9/11.

Swabbing is indeed for testing for explosive composition. I've flown out of SFO plenty of times with firearms back when I was an SF native. TSA up there was surprisingly lax about everything.

It can be pretty painless flying with firearms, however, I got pissed as hell once time when my Pelican case was left in the baggage area unattended in the middle of the floor area for 'oversized' items.

Pelican cases are obvious in that they tend to contain valuables, since we no longer check tags at the airport any piece of **** could've walked off with it.

Any baggage can contain valuables. You want 24/7 security for your luggage, I don't think that's the airline's job.

How many extra staff should the airlines hire to stand around in the baggage claim area waiting for people to show up to take away their luggage?

Considering my luggage contains firearms, yes that would be lovely.

There is already 1-2 staff members regulated to manage late luggage in the airline center of the baggage claim, looping in sensitive (firearms) / oversized items into their area would be a simple task.

If I have to do my due diligence in a hard case + "TSA" approved locks i'd appreciate a little care on their end as well.

All the baggage people I ever see at airports are constantly busy fielding complaints from whiny travelers. In fact, I'd be a little irritated if I saw them just standing around picking their noses if I had a problem that needed solving.

Traveled with hard long gun cases many times, and they usually end up in the oversized baggage area with all the other oversized bags (you know, worthless trash like skis and golf clubs and racing bicycles). It is what it is.

Ive seen a TSA agent press on the pistol case foam to see if there was anything under it.
And this is at a small local airport that sees lots of LEOs flying with pistols.

I used to fly back and forth from SJC and LAS, occasionally SAN and PHX. 90% of the time the firearms case, big and small are handled properly, from airplane hand carried to the luggage office. The Southwest counter agents know what to do upon declaration, no bug eyed seen-a-ghost look in their faces when they see guns. Traveling with firearms through airports in NV and AZ is routine, and am pleasantly surprised SJC does very well with firearms.
