Hey guys wanna pick your brains. I wanna do some ballistic tests with varible ammo types. I know Ballistics gel is the industry standard but i was hopping to find something cheaper and more stable for extended times. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I wouldn't shoot people. Not cool.
A few years ago I went to Graingers and got a bunch (30+) of catalogs. Think 1500 page phone book type. Threw them in an ice chest to soak them in water and went shooting. Set them up against a hill, so as to provide support. And shot them. Pulled the slugs out. It was pretty cool. Did 3 or 4 different calibers and all sorts of ammo types. Not a single handgun round went through at point blank range. 5.56 out of an ar Pistol did though.Comment

Along time ago all the gun magazines used clay.
Nothing fancy probably just the cheapest clay they could buy blocks of.
my guess is you could probably harvest some yourself if there are any clay deposits in your area or find a local art supply store / Potter owner of a kiln.
I actually like the dramatic looks of the results better then the more realistic ballistic gelatin.
It leaves large cavities that don't close up like ballistic gelatin.
I think you could do a Google image search to see what I'm talking about.Comment

If there was something cheaper and more stable for extended periods of time, I'd think that it would be used by the industry.
Gel is used because you can get consistent density throughout the block. Not much else is going to give you that, at least not inexpensively. It's probably easier to rely on the testing that has already been done, and paid for by someone else. Preferably a third party not on the ammo company payroll.Comment

If you are just goofing around, a water box is an option:
Will thick and heavy clothing prevent a Jacketed Hollow Point from opening up as designed? We had tested some older bullet designs and they seemed to become "plugged-up" by the cloth and did not expand as we expected. Today, we are going to shoot some Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP) ammo into some...
...or gallon milk jugs full of water.
