Shooting Range SHUT DOWN - A Sad Day!!!

    Hi Calgunners,

Most of you probably already know this that Chabot Outdoor Shooting Range in the Redwood Hills, Castro Valley has shut down permanently.

I wasn't aware of that - it was my favorite shooting range. I loved the drive up in the hills - with great anticipation - before even getting to the range. Beautiful scenery on the way. The fact it was outdoors and you could spend a whole Sat afternoon Target practicing; and make a picnic out of the trip on warm sunny day. IT's ALL GONE!!!!

I wasn't a regular, but for over 2 decades I'd been going there. I checked out their website this morning, cuz I wanted to take my new rifile, and I know they had a promo where 1st time new gun shooting is (was) free. It was heart breaking to see on the website stating they're closed. Sorry for the rant, but had to share my emotion with some fellow gunners...

Is there an alternate to this?

I'm curious as to why it shut down. State legal action? Feds? Lawsuit? Bankruptcy? Loss of lease?

Stupidity. The Club did not have a single member on the Board that voted for the range to stay or go. In the year leading up to the event 3 out of the 7 voting board members were merely appointed as they ran unopposed for the position. Had a Range member or Club member run with even modest votes turned in they would have had control of thier destiny. The Range had no control of its own destiny. I went to the last big hurrah meeting and if you could not tell the decision had been made months before, you were not paying attention. This is a common theme. Anti-s move into key positions and then with a stroke of a pen do in seconds what a court battle could not accomplish in years.

The battle they distracted everyone with was lead abatement and noise. The noise compliant had some small merit as you could hear the range on the weekends if the weather was right, but the hours the range kept were well within those "approved".
The lead abatement issue was also really a non-starter, as the tests were within the standards set and they had a plan in place to actually go beyond what was being demanded. The Parks Board basically said that they did not believe the range could pay for the plan they proposed, and that was the argument that was used to justify the vote.

Bottom line, lose control of your politicians and this is what happens.

Ranges shutting down is a growing trend.
I once pondered over the debate of 9mm vs. .40, then I was introduced to .38 super and 10mm and forgot all about it.

It's mostly a function of population growth and urban sprawl.

It's hard to get too indignant, all of us are guilty. For example, when I grew up in south Orange County, we were surrounded by hilly rangeland and orange orchards. We raged at all the development that subsequently took place around us and all the people that moved in, but then this is what Laguna Niguel looked like before we moved in:

Yeah, we sure screwed that up, with the very first housing tract.

A few other important ranges have closed as well. Now we're all being forced onto private property.

I was fortunate enough to inherit some land( 2 40 acre parcels) and have my own shooting range. Unfortunately in time I am sure the man will find a way to ban me from having it!
