    Does black powder require compression to explode?

    Yes, no, sort of. Let's see if I remember this correctly.

    It requires confinement. If you pour a big pile of powder on the ground it just burns. If you take a blowtorch to a can of powder (not recommended) then it explodes but the initial burning of the powder creates a lot of gases which compresses the remaining unburnt powder which then lets it explode.

      I'm using it for high power rocketry. It's the only powder that does not have to be tightly enclosed to blow off a body tube or nose cone to deploy a parachute. The stuff works great!!!

        It's been awhile but from what I remember:
        compressed = propellent
        loose = explosive
        this is in regard to being in a chamber or barrell, otherwise your mileage may vary. Best to do a little research specific to your application.
        Also BP substitutes (Pyrodex etc) all act differently so be sure of your powder, measurements, and application.
