Where are the $20+ federal gigs?

Got one question about the Firearm card- What calibers can I use? I have a .44mag/spl and a 9x18 Mak but I have a feeling they are not allowed for use...

Depends what the company requires, but the common calibers are 9mm .40sw or .45 I have never heard of anyone allowing .44mags. Some companies also require a certain gun manufacture too, usually glock, beretta, sig, s&w, usually what the 5o carries.

IF you do security. GO Federal. Anything else is a complete and utter waste of time. I work a Federal Site as of now and it is pretty good. 27.91/hour plus benifits. However, don't make any security job a career. Every company I have worked for sucks in some way or another. And remember, especially with a Federal site, you can be removed (fired) for ANY reason. If you look at someone the wrong way, you can be gone and believe me, Federal employees don't care if they cost you your job because of their ego. Most Federal employees are complete ***holes. I've been doing this for over 5 years, I know.

Where are the $20+ federal gigs?

Usually at Federal Office Buildings. Such as the one in Oakland, CA. The Ron Dellums Federal Building. The company that has that contract is Trinity Protection Services out of Sacramento.

The FAA (Federal Aviation Adminstration) is another way to go. They have contract armed guards at their facilities as well.

I worked private security when I started going to college. It paid garbage, but the schedule was somewhat flexible. I worked 60 hours a week to make ends meat, plus school time. not much time left over for other college fun. Plus, I probably paid a good 500 out of my pocket to get all the licenses and permits, guard card, gun, O.C., Side handle, straight baton, expandible baton, defensive tactics, report writing, etc.
I eventually started to wise up and I got a job working "security" type work at the college I was going to. they had a student patrol program and that paid better than my private security gig. Plus I was working for real cops that actually cared for my safety. My private security company treated us like garbage.
As I progressed through school, I wised up even more and decided to apply with the county as a peace officer. I am now married, have three kids, own a house, bought my last two cars brand new from the dealer, have two dogs, two cats and we even have a pet rat. I am living the american dream because I got smart. The pay is great and the benefits are descent also.
moral of the story, dont waste your time with security, try to get a job at your college as a student worker, parking officer, etc. doesnt cost you anything and the pay and schedule will most likely be better. when you have finished school, go with some type of law enforcement agency, Local, County, State or Federal. You wont get rich but you will live a comfortable life. If the economy is good or bad, law enforcement always has job security. The only way you can make any good money in security is if you own the company yourself as one of the previous posters mentioned. Plus, as a civil servant, I have protections, the private security contractors can let you go any time they like. If they loose contracts because of the economy, guess what happens to your job. good luck

I've waited almost a month in a half, the DOJ and BSIS work like dinosaurs, They have horrible communication with each other. I know they're understaffed state offices but this is F'd up.

2) Can anyone give me advice on being a transit security at rail road stations?
I've been seriously considering doing that. This will be my 1st job and the company in question seems like they'll hire you as a entry level guard.

Your guard card should post on the BSIS web page in about 30 days. Your gun card will take about 90 days.

Check http://www.dca.ca.gov/bsis/online_se..._license.shtml and click on "Security Guard" at the bottom of the list to see if your guard card has posted and click on "Firearm Permit" about a third of way down the list to see if your gun card has posted. But remember, you can work without a hard guard card in your pocket (it is legal to carry the print out in place of the hard guard card) but you cannot work until you have the hard gun card in your possession.

I've been seriously considering doing that. This will be my 1st job and the company in question seems like they'll hire you as a entry level guard.

In San Diego the transit security is contracted out to Heritage Security, but they don't pay much and will work you to death. There are many other good armed jobs available. If you are interested, send me a Private Message.

Working security sucks, it really does. I am quitting my 3rd security job today, I go in at noon to hand in my uniform. These companies claim to care about you, and then stab you in the back, then when you get fed up and quit they get upset and plead from you to come back. The is only so many times the dog can get kicked before it's gonna bite back or run away...

I received my Guard Card in 3 mos. and my Exposed Firearm Permit took approx. 6 mos. This was in 2003. I'm thinking about getting my P.P.O License. Hopefully it
wont take longer than 4-5 months...not holding my breath.

Its ok... I have the BSIS number on speed dial on my phone i'm going to make it a plan to call at least once a week, until they get tired of me.

Is it possible to just drive up to Sac and goto their office and pick it up

Dude mine didn't come in for 3 1/2 months!!!! My firearms permit took about a month.

Actually I just had to attend a mandatory firearms training class and the trainer(swat guy) went over a few scenarios where it would be okay to shoot someone in the back.

If you did a execution style shooting you would likely face criminal and a civil lawsuits to follow. My instructor is a 21 yr Marine corps vet whos attended the courses at Quantico,Va. What he told me is to shoot if they have the ability, the means and intent to harm.
