Look gun rights are the LEAST of your issues here. Its a reason we are downers. I mean the food is great and the woman hot. San Diego is the coolest and whatnot but DUDE. Consider how old the guns are and if they have ever been registered, before going overboard.
Also, it is no joke about your salary. It had better be in the 200K area or higher.
Lets say you actually find a house (They don't build houses in California any longer, it's high density projects for the people who used to be middle class).
It will be at least 1M if you want to live through the night. Property taxes on 1M are 12,500 per year (1.25% of sale).
In San Mateo county, a family of 4 with a family income of 106K is eligible for public assistance. In other words, YOU POOR!

I had to look it up, & to be polite about it WTF! Didn't some illegal kill a young lady on a pier a few years back in California, saw it on the news. Wouldn't that bill make for more of the same? I'm a little dumbfounded by that. Just curious why is the mindset so against America in cailifornia. Also I'm extremely confused how your politicians got elected into office. I just don't get it. I came in here for some advice about legality of a ruger charger and now I'm craping myself, thinking what am I getting myself into.

I can't speak for the cost of living in OC but up in the Bay area there is a tax for everything. Gun laws are stupid and slowing eroding away our gun rights.
But there are alot of things that are great about California once you get thru the hippie bull****.
I'm a PA native and moved here on military orders, I retired from Active duty, then my family started putting roots down and we haven't moved(yet) We might move someday but until then I try to change what I dont like and I make the most out what I do like.

YES!!!! We are not kidding. You either make mid six figures or YOU ARE POOR. People from other states (other than NY or MA for example) have NO IDEA what they are getting into. Some schlub working for $40K a year gets transferred to CA with a "cost of living" bonus of 25% and gets here thinking he's living the life. THEN he realizes that he sold his 5 bed 4 bath home in IL or IN or wherever and gets to trade that for a roomy 2 bed 2 bad (no garage) condo in some stucco hell. Welcome to CA.

A lot of people view California as the dream state! Good weather, beautiful people, beaches, and mountains etc... Yup it's pretty. BUT you better be able to put up with the stupid politics and the HIGH taxes, HIGH COST OF LIVING and congestion!!

As others have stated . I really hope your new job is paying you ATLEAST 125-150k a year ( if you have a family ) and want to live in OC.

Making 125-150 is enough to buy a 450-550k home (1200-1600 square feet home / 4000-6000 square foot lot ) in a not so great area. $650 + for the good areas. Have 2 new cars and thats about it. You will not be broke ( making 125-150 ) But if you made that in other states you have a mini mansion

All of Hillary Clinton's 2.9 million "national" popular vote margin in the 2016 presidential election came from California, where Clinton got >4 million more votes than President Trump.

A lot of people are moving out of California because they can't afford to live there anymore.

For every home buyer coming into the state, there are three Californians selling and moving elsewhere, according to data analysis firm CoreLogic.

"There is clearly a relationship between the migration patterns and home prices," said Sam Khater, deputy chief economist at CoreLogic. "The middle and lower middle can no longer afford to live in California."

California's housing market is one of the most expensive in the nation, with a median home price of $428,000 across the state. Prices have shot up 71% since 2011.

Karen Francis and her husband left the San Francisco Bay area in January after he was offered a job in Vancouver, Washington. While their move was career motivated, it's been good for their budget.

They now own a 2,600-square-foot home that is almost double the size of the place they were renting in California.

And it's not just their housing costs that have shrunk. The couple, which have an infant daughter, are also paying less in gas, utilities and services like garbage collection. And commute times are significantly better.

Leaving California? After slowing, the trend intensifies

Given its iconic hold on the American imagination, the idea that more Americans are leaving California than coming breaches our own sense of uniqueness and promise. Yet, even as the economy has recovered, notably in the Bay Area and in pockets along the coast, the latest U.S. Census Bureau estimates show that domestic migrants continue to leave the state more rapidly than they enter it.

The San Francisco Bay Area lost more than 600,000 net domestic migrants between 2000 and 2009 before experiencing a five-year respite. Now, sadly, the story seems to be changing again. Housing prices, first in the Bay Area and later in other metropolitan areas, have surged mightily, and are now as high as over nine times household incomes. In 2016, some 26,000 more people left the Bay Area than arrived. San Francisco net migration went from a high of 16,000 positive in 2013 to 12,000 negative three years later.

Similar patterns have occurred across the state. Between 2010 and 2015, California had cut its average annual migration losses annually from 160,000 to 50,000, but that number surged last year to nearly 110,000. Losses in the Los Angeles-Orange County area have gone from 42,000 in 2011 to 88,000 this year. San Diego, where domestic migration turned positive in 2011 and 2012, is now losing around 8,000 net migrants annually.

Some so-called progressives hail these trends, as forcing what they seem to see as less desirable elements — that is, working- and middle-class people — out of the state. They allege that this is balanced out by a surge of highly educated workers coming to California. Essentially, the model is that of a gated community, with a convenient servant base nearby.

California Dream Died by Exporting Middle Class

But California has been on net exporting its citizens for decades. That trend accelerated to approximately 930,000 net Californians leaving the Golden State between 2004 and 2015. Most left to seek better economic opportunities in Arizona, Texas, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington, according to the Census Bureau

It is California’s middle class that is fleeing California, not the rich. The net migration of the state’s top 20 percent is about flat and the next quintile is actually seeing positive immigration from other states. But 85 percent of those out-migrating are in the middle 20 percent income bracket and the next lower quintile.

California is replacing the citizens that are leaving with foreign immigrants. From about 9 percent of California being foreign born in 1970, by 2015, about 27 percent were foreign born. The eight California counties of Santa Clara, San Mateo, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Alameda, Imperial, Orange, and Monterey have over 30 percent foreign-born residents, according to the Public Policy Institute of California.

Most foreign-born residents of California have some form of legal status with about 49 percent being naturalized citizens; 26 percent have some legal status through green cards or visas, and "just" 25 percent are illegal aliens.

The most glaring difference between foreign-born immigrants and California-born citizens is education attainment for those age 25 and older; 34 percent of foreign-born do not have a high school diploma, versus 8 percent of California-born residents.

With California exporting its middle-class citizens and importing the foreign-born poor, it should not be surprising that Breitbart News recently reported that the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim area was rated by the Census Bureau review as the metropolitan area with the highest poverty rate in the nation, at 17.6 percent.

It’s Still a Mad, Mad California

Coastal elites set rules for others, exempt themselves, and tolerate rampant lawlessness from illegal aliens.

The American progressive elite relies on its influence, education, money, and cultural privilege to exempt itself from the bad schools, unassimilated immigrant communities, dangerous neighborhoods, crime waves, and general impoverishment that are so often the logical consequences of its own policies — consequences for others, that is. Abstract idealism on behalf of the distant is a powerful psychological narcotic that allows caring progressives to dull the guilt they feel about their own privilege and riches.

Nowhere is this paradox truer than in California, a dysfunctional natural paradise in which a group of coastal and governing magnificoes virtue-signal from the world’s most exclusive and beautiful enclaves. The state is currently experiencing another perfect storm of increased crime, decreased incarceration, still ongoing illegal immigration, and record poverty. All that is energized by a strapped middle class that is still fleeing the overregulated and overtaxed state, while the arriving poor take their places in hopes of generous entitlements, jobs servicing the elite, and government employment.

Believe it or not, the killer got a lot of sympathy from the Bay Area. Kate Steinle, the victim, got more attention from those outside of CA , she's just a blip on the CA political radar. Very sad.
