I own a couple of AK's and am looking to pick up a budget project rifle. I see the Century RAS47 going for $560 to $570 havnt seen any terrible reviews on it. Is it a solid AK for the price?

One of the worst AK's you can buy; IO being the worst.

I own one and have no problems with it but really it just sits in the safe.

You can buy a WASR for not much more.

ive heard the same about IO. I go to a local dealer that pushes IO over every other brand.

For someone who "owns" a couple of AKs already you should already know about the above. But keep these inane threads coming.

But in answer to your question the RAS47 is a decent rifle, the more recently produced ones are of much better quality. They seem to have fixed their quality control issues. I own one and it shoots fine.

WASR got that rap back when high quality Chinese rifles were still available.

I have handled a RAS. It's an abomination. I would not buy any American made AK at this time.
Not sure if the DDIs are still available. Those were built with mostly Hungarian parts and were supposed to be decent.

If you haven't seen terrible reviews on the RAS47, then you haven't looked very hard. Instead of looking mainly at the price point, look at value compared to price.

If you want a decent inexpensive AK, do yourself a favor and get a WASR. They have been proven to be reliable and rugged. Maybe not as cheap as they once were, but they are a solid rifle that can be had for under $700.

Zastava N-PAPs are good to go as well. Mine's been solid. And like everyone has already mentioned, the newer WASRs. Pretty much anything other than that RAS47.

EDIT: You mentioned you wanted it as a project rifle so just wanted to add if you do go with a Zastava that they require Serbian/Yugoslavian specific parts depending on what you want to do with it.

Vepr Sporter is a great AK for the money!

Made in Russia, RPK bulged receiver and thicker cold hammer forged barrel.

Minor gunsmithing installing bullet guide and fitting on mag latch if you want it to accept AK mags muzzle devices. Not a big deal.
