Have both. .38 loaded into an air-light for your belly gun if you are in physical contact. 9mm to get to your shotgun.

I vote for this.

The little guns are ways for you to reach your big guns.

When it comes down to these two, I say the 9mm. Only because it can be reloaded faster and has 2 more than the 38. But if shtf and I reache
over to grab a gun, any would do....except for the Sig Mosquito. Haha.

I have and use both, but prefer 9mm just because I am more comfortable with the platform. My revolvers are range toys mostly...

When it comes to the effectiveness of small arms, I'd rather listen to the homicide investigators who've been in gunfights and researched hundreds if not thousands more, and attended autopsies for decades, and the doctors who've treated hundreds of gunshot victims, and performed the autopsies, than the jello-blasters.

I prefer revolvers for HD personally so of the 3 revolvers around my house two are loaded with 38 and one is loaded with 357.

But that's just me.

Jello blasters allow for controlled conditions that case studies do not. I do think there is value in large collections of shooting data which helps tease out anomalous results. Those detectives and doctors often bring their own biases to the table.

1) Unless you live in a mansion most shots are going to be 10-15 feet at a maximum. This takes the ballistics between 38 special and 9mm or 40 and .357 Mag. out of the equation.
2) Controlled brass with revolver so you won't be distracted by spent cases bouncing off walls.

12ga Rem 870 with 00-Buck. Each one of those pellets is .38 and I get to scatter 9 of them with each trigger pull.

I would reiterate a 12 gauge shotgun with 00 Buck. Nothing else comes close.
