VIDEO: Queens Gun Buy-Back Nets 1K Firearms

I'm assuming the handful of guns shown in the video are the best out of the whole lot.

New York City officials say 919 guns were collected during a one-day buy-back program at six Queens churches.

The program paid $200 to anyone who turned in a gun. A pellet or BB gun was worth $20. The officials say they paid a total of $158,880.

The weekend buy-back results were announced Tuesday by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

Since last summer, similar programs in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island _ plus the Queens effort _ have netted more than 3,500 guns. More than half of them are handguns.

The goal is to reduce crime and tragic accidents.

All the guns used in crimes were turned in and crimes won't be solved either I guess. Perfect way to get rid of the crime guns and get paid for it.

Well isn't that special. They just paid six figures to help get rid of 3,500 pieces of evidence from various crimes.

tell me, who the hell would trade an UZI for $200? and did anyone else notice, at the end of the video, on the far right of the table, it appears there is like a 2 foot long revolver?

1911 was worth atleast $500. The uzi is hard to find these days. They could have made alot on gunbroker.

Wow. All those were on the street? Amazing.

I wonder if that uzi was a legal SBR.

What happens to these guns? The state could make a load of money by reselling them on GunBroker!

Wait a second - thats really really stupid isnt it. There are many guns worth more than 200, so we can assume that:

                        1. Many were owned illegally and this was an 'out'
                        2. Many were used illegally and this was an 'out'
                        3. *Some* people owned them legally and decided to throw away extra money by not just selling it at a shop or online...

So... throwing out #3 for a second, we can also say that someone who owns a gun illegally (or doesnt know if they are legal) and chooses to turn it in probably isnt the kind of person who would have done something illegal with the gun anyway.

So the net effect of something like this is to take money from fools, take guns from people who probably are non-criminal (now) , and allow criminals who committed crimes with guns to get money for them and never have to think about the crime again.

                        nice.

I loved the episode of Reno 911 when they had the gun for toys program. You trade in your gun & you get a toy. Trudy put the box of guns on the roof of her car & drove off. They fell all over the road.

There isn't any evidence that buy backs help the crime situation and yet Bloomberg and everyone else that holds these things insists on using taxpayer money to score some political points.

edit: after watching the video, knowing those beautiful 1911s will be destroyed brings a tear to my eye...
