Ive been stocking up on ammo for years. Some I keep in ammo cans and some just in their boxes. Does ammo have a shelf life?

I put 50 or so rounds through my 1911 that I was told was WW2 era ammo. The box didn't have a date stamped on it that I can recall, however everything about it certainly looked that part. It ran just fine. I'm pretty sure that ammo was stored in a cabinet in a barn on the property that I was on for god knows how long. You're good OP.As the great warrior poet Ice Cube once said "If the day does not require an AK, it is good."Comment

Go ahead and encourage him. I'm not insulting anyone just pointing out you're all being played. He doesn't care about the answers. But go ahead and make me the bad guy if that makes you feel better friendo.Last edited by bronco75a; 06-03-2017, 11:56 PM.Comment

I don't have a definitive answer compiled from references of several people who live in various climates.
I'll share my personal experience though.
I started buying ammo in bulk in the mid~late 90's. Still have some purchased during that time, too. Over the years I've bought factory fresh new production ammo, as well as milsurp ammo produced in the 40's through the 70's, some corrosive.
I live in the IE, with relatively low humidity year round. Temperatures during Winter can be in the 30's at night, and during Summer can be +/- 112. In other words, big fluctuation in ambient temperature, but gradual based on season.
My ammo is stored in my garage. My garage is not insulated or climate controlled.
I've never had a problem across the board with any of my ammo that can be attributed to its storage.Comment

Humidity is your enemy. Temperature swings also ruin ammo. I had ammo that moved all over the country over 10 years. It still shot but would not cycle so I gave it to a friend to turn into components. if the brass or bullet looks dull it is going bad.sigpic
