Depends on the situation. Doesnt hurt to give them a call and ask for the manager and ask him or her. You will probably get a positive out of it.

A lot of merchants exchange the items if you bought it with a credit card. I did it at Lowes and Best Buy, they can run the credit card and retrieve the sales record based on the card.
