There are recent stories here, from both buyers and from FFLs, indicating that 'undetermined' is not always automatic after 30 days, and the FFLs sometimes have to call and hound DOJ for days to get them to flip it to undetermined.

Need advice on a firearm transfer issue

As a FFL I will give you some insight on this delay issue.
1. We are notified of a delay or a denial.
2. If it goes to a delay we need to wait the 30 days for it to flip to undetermined or released.
3. If the firearm is "released after delay" we are notified.
4. If it goes undetermined WE ARE NOT NOTIFIED. We have to keep checking back on the DROS to see the change in status. Unless you are dealing with a very small shop we will not remember in 30 days to start stalking the DROS system for you.
5. Most of my undetermined flipped over in the system on day 32 to 35.
6. Once it changes to undetermined we still need a NCIS number provided by California DOJ before we release. This comes in the mail anywhere 1 to 2 weeks after the undetermined. We can call and get a number sooner but not all shops know to do this.
Determine if your shop releases on undetermined before you start a DROS. After 30 days kindly remind your dealer your 30 days are up (give a few days here).
Trust me as dealers we hate this undetermined thing probably more than you do.You, you, and you: Panic. The rest of you, come with me.
Incoming fire has the right of way.

Yes, thank you for chiming in.We have too much to lose and so we'll lose it all - sd_shooterI try to frame my response to be useful to those observing, with little regard to convince the opponent of my awesomeness - EM2TRUMP/NUNESIt's hard to win an argument with a smart person, but it's impossible to win an argument with a stupid person - WhitefangComment

Past day 30 you should get the gun. If FFL won't release it have the seller (your friend) just go pick it up.Comment
