    Moving to California

Hello everybody. This is my first post other that my introduction on the new members forum. I'm hoping you guys can clear up a few things for me I haven't been able to find online.

First, it's my understanding that the handgun roster only applies to new guns I would buy once I move, and will not affect the pistols I have now. Is this correct? I understand I will have to leave all of my magazines over 10 rounds out of the state, but with 10 round magazines I can bring pretty much any pistol with me as long as it isn't over .50 cal, right?

Second, I have 2 AR's that I built on stripped lowers marked Multi cal. I plan to avoid registering them as "assault weapons", probably with mag locks. After reading the form for registering guns for new residents, I'm confused what I should put down for caliber and barrel length, as I have multiple uppers in various calibers. Anyone know what I need to do there?

And third, I haven't decided where I'm going to live yet, and a ccw is important to me, having carried for 5 years. I'll be working covering a territory that is pretty much LA county, but don't want to live there from what I've heard about their willingness to issue permits. I will be moving in with a friend while I look for apartments, and was hoping for some advise on which counties are pro 2nd amendment. San Bernadino? Orange?

Any replies are appreciated. I hope I got this in the right thread, and didn't ask too many questions for one post.

    Thanks,
    Mike

To your first point, you are correct, with a caveat, look over the handgun ban ID flowchart, you are not allowed to have threaded muzzles on your pistols. So if you have a pistol with one, you need to switch that barrel out.

As to your second point, you wouldn't be able to register them even if you wanted to. You would've had to have been living here prior to 1/1/17 with your rifles to even be able to register them here. You will need to convert those to featureless before you move here.

I heard Torrance PD is pretty good at issuing CCWs maybe Glendale, that might be misinformation, though. Otherwise, don't plan on getting a CCW in Los Angeles County. But if you want a CCW, live in San Bernadino County, Riverside County.

Otherwise, I'm sorry for your loss. California sucks for gun owners.

Welcome Mike! But why move to this anti-gun state??? haha.

        1) What you stated is correct

        2) Let others also chime in before taking my word...put the caliber you mostly use with that lower. I don't think it's a big deal, especially you will be using a maglock and not registering as AW.

        3) Yeah, forget about LA county if you want CCW. I live in NorCal, so the SoCal folks can chime in on this as to what SoCal county will issue CCW.

Turn around. There is NO good reason to move to California.

This is the the law but good luck enforcing it in this instance. If I were you I wouldn't tell anyone about it and bring them in state and register them when the website goes live. There is no way for CA to know they were not here prior to the beginning of the new year since youve owned them for quite some time. As long as you don't do anything really stupid to catch their attention you should be fine.

Normally I wouldn't advocate breaking the "law" but I consider it a white lie.

              Ok, no threaded barrels. Check.

What if I register one lower as a .22? Can I keep my magazine release then?
And then put a mag lock on the other and just register it as a regular rifle?

I don't like the idea of registering my guns at all, but would rather be able to keep them in the event a LEO ever looks at them for some reason.

Moving for work btw. Been to LA several time before and am less than impressed, but it's a good opportunity so I'll try to make the best of it.

I think I'll start looking for places in San Bernadino. Anyone from Orange Co. here have a ccw? Maybe I'll start a new topic in those threads for more info.

              Thanks for all the replies!

Orange County is also very pro CCW. You do have to have a good cause statement (self defense not accepted), but search around here, and you will get many ideas what may work for you. Plus now in Orange County you can have up to 5 guns registered to your CCW permit.

I wouldn't say "very" pro CCW. Yes, you CAN get one. Yes you need good cause, and about $400.00 min. And it takes almost a YEAR to get your first CCW, And you have to renew every 2 years and renewals take 3-4 months, and cost over $100.00. But, yeah, you CAN get one.

3 days, $100 in Iowa depending on your training cost, good for 5 years and $25 to renew. Gonna miss that.

Honestly I would never move to this state. Everything costs too much and it's getting more expensive every year. You might think that you'll be fine because your job pay a lot but you need to look at the cost of living. Gas and registration costs are going up next to year and registration already went up this year too. $444 to register my truck. Was only about $86 last year.
