You know, one hundred dollar scopes are a lot better than they used to be. I remember cheap $100 Tasco scopes, that you bought at K Mart, and you could not see 30 caliber holes at 100 yards with the things. Just awful.

Because I buy the things, I have my share of cheap spotting scopes. I bought this Celestron 18 X 55 65 mm objective lense scope and found it to have excellent optics for the price. http://www.opticsplanet.com/celestro...ing-scope.html

      Excellent.
Reminds me of the movie "Soylent Green", in which Heston referred to the women as "furniture".

        200yds, looking for .22 sized holes. It's doable with a sub $100
        spotting scope.
Three requirements. Good sunny daylight. "Splash" type paper target. Multiple hits on shoot&see type target.
I find .22 rimfire holes are easier to find than .223 at longer ranges.

So the spotting scope arrived and I tried it out on the 50 yard range.
It's alright, but not great. Certainly has the mirage people were talking about and the tripod it came with sucks so I used a tripod I already had instead. It's zoom is kinda blurry and not great either.

I'm returning it to Amazon, I'll deffinitly just put the money towards a better spotting scope.

Cut a hole or square in the cardboard directly behind the target aiming point (or black). This will help you see the shot holes (especially 22cal at 200 yards) with your spotting scope.

Back when I still shot Service Rifle Across the Course, I setup my practice SR target boards for my regular range (where we have no one pulling and marking targets) in this manner. Even with a 27x on a Kowa 821M, seeing 22cal holes in the black at 200 isn't easy.
