Bought my nephew his first BB gun

My little nephew sawyer is 4 years old and I wanted to get it for him for Christmas but ended up giving it to him at Easter with the story that Santa was a little late.

When I gave it to him I told him that it was for when he was with his dad or myself and that he had to be a good boy, eat his vegetables and listen to his parents. When I took him out to show him how it worked he was concerned that the BB would come back and hit him but a little explanation of safety cleared that up. He was more mystified by it than anything. Future range sessions will obviously occur.

I figured it was time to get him one to upgrade from shooting stuffed animals on the couch with a Nerf pistol. As soon as I saw a photo of the Nerf deal I knew I had to get him a BB gun.

Just had to share. Love my little nephew and can't wait to arm the rest of them.

I hate to be the one to tell you this. But check your local city laws.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.
    I'm Back.

It's a Red Ryder and we have a place. I'm not concerned about it. I could shoot it indoors with a nice denim blanket and still be fine if I wanted.

Congratulations that's the kind of story I like to see threads about.

That's a very cool gift for a growing boy. He'll probably remember you giving it to him for a long long time.

Those red Ryder type BB rifles you can almost see the bb traveling in an arc with your naked eye, it's going so slowly.
(Sure the bb could possibly bounce off something hard like metal or wood but usually the velocity at that returning point means it would have to hit you in a open eye to do any thing at all. So maybe some inexpensive safety glasses from the hardware store might be in order, as it would teach him something additional about safety. although I know my friends and I never had that when we were young.)

I forget who it was but one of those famous gun gurus recommended starting youngsters (or even new shooters) off with that type of low powered BB "rifle" and then just decreasing the size of your targets down to things as small as bottle caps or even aspirins.

It teaches the youngsters about safety, how to align for properly aiming, sight picture... etc.

I had one of those Red Ryder type BB guns. My parents got a big refrigerator box and flattened it so that it could be used as a backstop. I always had a supply of BBs since I would pick them out of the cardboard and reuse them.

Awesome, I'd recommend doing what I did with my son, treat if just like a real firearm, eyes and ears every time. It builds good habbits for when you hook him up with a Savage Rascal in a few years. You will get some ricochet eventually if you shoot it enough, those RR guns are so slow they almost are more prone to bouncing back at you from surfaces you wouldn't believe. Good news is its generally too slow to hurt you if you got glasses on.

I have bought all of my grandsons Red Ryders for their first birthday and even a pink one for grand daughter. Now they all have Rossi 22LR/410 combo single shots. And a coarse a pink one for little princess!

                    Nice gift!

As a kid, we used to shoot oranges in the orange groves in Anaheim...to watch them bleed. Back when Orange County WAS Orange County.

I had an idiot friend that was screwing around with a bb gun and pointed it at a mutual friend's sister. Yup, put her eye out.
