    Bore Solvvents

    Hello to all,

Before I went out and bought some I wanted to try the solvent "Shooter Choice" on my Remington 700 in stainless steel. I hesitated because I went to the Midway website and read the comments section. One person commented that using Shooters Choice contributes to either chamber or barrel erosion. Which one I can't remember.

Any of you hard core bolt action fans can you tell me if this is true? It doesn't appear to be overly aggressive in it's formula but I can be wrong. If it is I'll choose another brand or just continue to use my old tried and true Birchwood Casey "Bore Scrubber".

I prefer to use a foaming solvent(wipeout)then a couple wet patches of Montana Extreme.Barrel takes 1hr to get clean, then Im off to the next competition.

I have used shooters choice without any issues. If you are still shpping, take a look at hoppes bore cleaner or sweets 762. I think they both clean better than SC.

        highpower790,

I've seen those type of solvents in foam. My buddy swears by them for a fast clean up but usually for me I prefer the old fashion way.

Usually for me my old fashion method usually take no more than the the time you stated. In fact if my bore take more than 1 hour to satisfy my bore cleaning chores then that means my bore has ALLOT of copper!!!

I too have seen "Montana Extreme" in the gun stores and it appears to be just like "Shooters Choice" just in a different brand.

So how do you like that product???

Montana Extreme is very good,I like it a lot,but due to its ammonia content ,don't stand over a open bottle.I only use it to remove the light oily film from the Wipeout.

            Bore Tech Eliminator: http://www.boretech.com/products/eli...r-bore-cleaner

Awesome stuff. Nothing caustic or dangerous to your barrel (no ammonia). Removes copper and carbon fouling. Doesn't smell bad. Affordable.

I have used both SC and Montana Extreme and they are in NO WAY similar. I also use Butches Bore Shine, Tetra Gun Solvent, Kriol oil, Blue Wonder and a few others.
BUT I always use Wipe-Out 1st and then there is little left to do. It is the best. With it you do not need to run the cleaning rod down the bore as many times which is always a good thing. Sometimes I just use the wipe-out and be done.

At least Shooters Choice is better than #9.

OK I get it but is SC ok to use on a stainless steel barrels? Does it erode the barrel faster?

Should make a great smelling salt?

I prefer Slip carbon cleaner, no smell, non-toxic.

I use Butch's Boreshine or Hoppes to remove the powder fouling, then Wipeout to get the copper out. I usually let the Wipeout sit in the bore for a couple hours. That seems to work the best for me as it seems to require several applications of Wipeout if the non-copper fouling is not removed first.

                        Calif Hunter,

Since you use two different types of solvents that requires more storage space than I can allow.

Based on your method which varies from one person to another I may as well stick with what I have/use and just soak out my barrel before taking a brush down the bore.

My personal favorite is Birchwood Casey "Bore Scrubber" which handles both fouling and copper. I was willing to try Shooters Choice as well but my question was the barrel erosion associated with the use of SC and stainless steel barrels like in the comment I saw on the Midway website from another user. I guess it was just that persons opinion and nothing more.

Thanks for everyone's postings. It was very informative.

I doubt Shooters choice is harmful. Benchrest shooters have been using it for decades mixed with Kroil. I've used it for decades, mostly with out the Kroil.

I bought Sweets 762 once, ate a hole through the plastic bottle, leaks into the metal drawer of a tool box lifted the paint and rusted the metal.

Wipe Out is good, the Bore Tech products are the best I've found.

I like me some bore shine for my rifles. I don't do any bench rest shooting though so if it's not perfectly clean it doesn't bother me too much. Most of my rifles are old milsurps anyway and a little fouling and dirt gives them character.
