    Learn From My Mistake

Ordered some bulk rifle ammo from an online retailer. They had a great price on 6.5 Creedmoor ELD-M. Product description said "1,000-round case." I made an assumption and now I'm kicking myself for it.

They sent five, separate, 200-round boxes instead of one actual 1,000-round case. And each box is a different lot #. Ugh... totally a pain for me. Now I'm gonna have to chrono and gather drops for each separate 200-round box. Learn from my mistake and always inquire about getting ONE lot of ammo, not mixed lots.

The difference between lots isn't huge. But it definitely matters at longer ranges. I've seen a 25fps difference between lots.

          Real down, man.

What's even more strange is they actually shipped each 200-round box separately. Like... why not put them all in one box like every other place you buy ammo? 5 boxes. 5 tracking numbers. Seems like more work.

What sort of variance is there between lots of powder?

Sounds like it was dropshipped from a distributor who has stock from various warehouses and suppliers. Must not be very saleable right now.

I doubt if there is measurable difference between lots of same ammo from the same year of manufacture. However, I'd like to see the OP's chrono results to see what he was worried about.

Variance between lots as in how it relates to velocity I'm unsure, but how it relates to primers staying in place or being blown out are 1/2-1gr in a powder charge.
I do have two lots to be tested,so Op I will let you know.

                    I can't remember where I saw it.

A thread on when not to buy Hornady Bullets.

Apparently at certain times of the year QC slips a little to meet big demanding orders.

Don't need to wait. I've been through this before. Different lots = different velocities. Like I said in the OP, I've seen a 25fps difference between lots. You "doubt" it? I mean... not much I'm willing to do to prove it to you. I'm a busy guy.

There are often measurable differences between lots of bullets, powder, and primers...making it very likely that will be differences between lots of factory loaded rounds. That's just a fact in LR/ELR shooting.
You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.
If I were you, I would not pass this up. I would not let this go by...this is rare.

Wait until January and then you will really have something to complain about.

How did you get ammo shipped to SF anyway?

                            lol really?

Why does everyone think it's illegal to get ammo shipped to SF?

                              FourT6and2,

I'm interested in your data regarding the overall consistency of that Hornady factory ammo.

So you have seen up to 25 fps variation in mean velocity between different lots.

What sorts of velocity SD and ES do you get within the same lot of ammo?

Also, how much velocity change do you see when shooting in cold vs hot temperatures?

How do you rank the various factory loads that you have tried, e.g. Copper Creek, Creedmoor Sports, Federal, Nosler, Prime, etc.
